Would it be fair to bust on Pg now that I have been to about a half dozen companys sites and seen the 2007 product offerings, and PG still has nothing new. Information age. Now now now!!!

Not to hype the Alpine unit too much, but since they seem to get that not everybody can go to CES they have a complete rundown on this unit on the alpine site. It is going to retail for $450, and from what ive read so far its SWEEET!

Also not that most of the folks here will be interested in this, but the new RF amps are tiny and very powerful. I have seen one up close, hopefully PG can follow the pattern.

Crazy... I checked out their site to see what is up, and I hate to say but I actually don't mind the looks of the new stuff. Very simple and black. The punch amps surprisingly look as good as I've seen them. If only they sounded as nice as they looked.... I might have switched to the dark side!

The subwoofers are also a giant leap back in the right direction since their last series with the plastic cones and fake rivets, though I don't like them as much as the older HE/HX series. They do look considerably similar to the stuff Alpine is putting out now (the Type-S series has gone black as well).

One thing I noticed is that that "tuner inspired" look seems to FINALLY be fading out, and most major brands are coming out with simplistic, robust styles. This makes me incredibly happy. Not only is the tuner stuff completely tacky, but it is damn next to impossible to get it to match anything in your car unless your install is built around the equipment. In 95% of cases, people just want a sub in a box, so the tuner inspired amps just look ricey and out of place... it is so much easier to make something look integrated when they are less flashy.

I definitely hope that PG takes heed and follows suit with a very simple, classy design for the next high end amp line.

Back to the RF amps, the pics dont do them justice, the one I got to see was about the size of a XS2300, and it was the mono amp that does over 1kw.

The unveiling of the Alpine car is pretty nice. Every year those guys step up to the plate big time. this year is another winner. Not at all pratical, but sweet.

This Clarion also looks very sweet........

Seriously...I really want to see those babies get released. If the regular RsDs are as sick as everyone is saying, Who knows what the comp woofers can do...

Yeah I was just looking at the new clarion units. This one looks pretty nice but it doesn't seem like you can add a cd changer. It also bugs me that they didn't add time alignment and that they have downgraded their equalizer a bit. You have to pick up their digital processor to have all the real intricate capabilities. It's gotta be to compete with JVC's single din 3.5" monitor unit. I wonder if they are starting to cater more to entry level enthusiasts...

But what's with their godawful double din? That thing is perhaps the most hideous deck I think I have ever seen!

Taking a page from some of those ridiculously busy Kenwood units out there maybe. That thing is bad...belongs on the strip with all the casinos, not at ces...

Ok, so not all of them are great looking. What was Clarion thinking, they do enough good that they have to do one nasty one here and there, really if you look at the other 2-din ones they have, they dont get the idea so well.

I really like the alpine deck, but Even though I have 99% of my shit on theh ipod, Im not sure I can get into a deck without a cd slot yet. Is that bad?

Wow, I didn't realize the alpine had no cd slot. I would never give up my cd slot. Even though digital quality is getting better and better, it still isn't the quality right off of that cd. You are always losing something when playing it off of your MP3 player unless it's in WAV but then an MP3 player wouldn't be as efficient if everything was stored on it in WAV. Even though your ears may not hear what is being cut out of the music, your body might feel it. I can't give up cds yet.

At the right volumes levels with a decently tuned sound system, I can hear the difference between a CD-quality digital encoding and an average MP3 encoding. AAC on the other hand, I have a much harder time distinguishing... and my music library is 95% AAC. Meh. For MP3, the quality difference that I can hear also seems to somewhat depends on the style or genre of music. Some styles and genres, I can't really tell the difference and other's it is very obvious.

I think having a CD slot isn't good for just quality applications, it's good for legacy applications. It's just a good thing to have around because CDs are still the current standard for music distribution, although it is changing and progressing (iTunes Music Store, etc). At least that's how I see it.

iTunes music store is crazy... #4 US retailer of all music, only under Target, Best Buy and Wal-mart. Now they are selling TV shows and movies. Damn, I thought the store would never fly, but it's giving everyone in the music industry a pride obliterating bitchslap instead.

Paying for a lossy medium in a digital-only format still creeps me out. I don't think I will ever use it.

Yeah, that also turns me off. But the whole online distribution method isn't very effective right now with full CD-quality tracks... (think of the bandwidth!) or even many modern lossless compression formats. I think it's a good idea in general, but I still like owning a physical CD and having access to a high(er) quality version of the recording if I ever need/want it.

I guess I will post this here because it is somewhat CES-techy relevant as well... Apple also had their first quarter Keynote speech, and they are going to be putting out some pretty crazy stuff;
