m series heatsink.....

Post by marko »

below is a link to an auction i'm hoping to win  i think it'll go pretty cheap but the heatsink is an issue, is this repairable or will it need a new heatsink and what's my chances of finding a new heatsink?

I wonder why he won't show the back side of it. Did something go through the back side of the amp?

I wouldn't think being bent like that would affect the performance of the heatsink that much, as there is still alot of heatsink area left. However you still have the issue of the blown channel to worry about.

I may be wrong about the heatsink thing too. I'm just throwing out ideas here.

i'm not too worried about the sheet metalwork as i can fix that easy enough and have it power coated, and i'm not worried about the working condition either, if one channel works at least it shouldn't have and major damage inside!

The face of the amp doesn't look too bad. I bet it cleans up more, and you can always find another amp in worse condition/broken and piece one good amp together.

I would guess the circuit board is damaged in that amp. Maybe damaged beyond repair. What ever caused that dent would have torqued the board badly, and likely fractured it all along the point where it meets the heatsink. Keep in mind the M heatsink is actually very strong. I had one with a slightly bent fin and no matter how hard I tried, I could not bend it back. To damage those fins that badly, the whole heatsink must have rolled a bit and sheared off some of the side screws, which would then put all the load on the board itself, and there is no way the board could take that.

I foresee this amp only being good for parts.

I thought of you Mark when I first saw that listed. Since it probably has internal damage it's more than I'd like to tackle, but I knew you'd be making a bid for it :D
