painting a headunit?

Okay well I decided to keep the p9, due to the fact simply I wont be able to get any other deck close to it but, the thing sticks out like a soar thumb in my dash.



So I took it apart tonight, which was quite easy.



Now how crazy would I be to paint it black. I know Ill have to use a razor blade and tape off, the screen, the chrome rings around the knobs, the clear area around the smaller buttons, the disp off light, reset botton, and the spot for the remote to send the signal. I would loose the silk screening too.

1st question to ask yourself would be...... How hard is it to get a replacement P9 facia & buttons from Pioneer so that you can always put it back to stock if need be.

Once you have these parts in hand then I'd say do whatever makes you feel good.

At least with the spares you'd be able to re-sell the deck in the future when `the next big thing' come's along.

No-one's gonna want to buy a P9 thats been painted.

Thats my 2c anyway.

EDIT: If you DO get a replacement facia, why not consider moulding the facia into the dash and re-painting the entire dash panel. Now that would look good!

For anything like that will see a lot of wear I would definitely use some high quality paint. I highly recommend SEM. I would start off with a good cleaner/degreaser. Then I'd use a scotchbrite pad to very slightly rough up the surface. I'd then use an aerosol plastic prep finally followed by your color choice of this "flexible coat"...

You can find these products in aerosol cans at your local paint specialty store.

It would give you a dark brushed metal look... like the Onyx amps, but more ghetto. Your silkscreening might show through as well.
