Help me decide - 1 RSD12 or 2 RSD12's

Hey guys...new poster here so be nice ;) Been reading these forums for a while now...finally have a relevant question to ask:

I already have a Xenon x600.1 amp and am trying to decide if I want to get 1 RSD12 or 2. I am shooting for an SQL setup. I'll be dropping the sub(s) into a 1.8cu ft per chamber sealed box (as recommended in another post). I am running Infinity Kappa 3 way coaxs in the front and back running 110 watts rms to each.

I know these subs have a 500 watt RMS but I've read they would do real well on only 300 watts rms (what the two subs would get off this amp). On the other hand I've heard the are magical if you overpower them.

My question is do I really need the second sub? Will I notice that much of a difference? Will the additional 300 watts going to the single sub sound that much more powerful/weak as compared to splitting the watts and having two subs?

I WANT the second sub...I'm just trying to decide if i NEED it - your opinion or suggestion is needed! :)

Thanks guys

Steve

when have we (except mastiff) never been nice! 8)

I say go with single sub. the added cone area of the second sub wont make very much difference.

what vehicle are you running it in?

i also run a x600.1 and until very recently ran an rsd 12 in a 1.6 cf box.

in a small to mid size car that set up is good for about 136db (on music) and sounds wonderful and low.

i guess only you can be the judge as to if thats enough for you.

The difference between one and two subs on the same power is approximately 3 decibels. Not a huge difference, while having the additional power on one subwoofer would make it more controlled at higher output levels.

Also, 1.8 cubic feet is a huge box... doubling that would eat up a good sized trunk, so I also recommend running a single 12D4.

That said I would recommend the RSD competition 12 instead! It just has some magical sound quality about it, and one of them gets crazy loud off of only 250 watts in my car. The standard RSD 12's are no slouch either, of course.

ok...THIS time i am not on crack Tom. the xenon definitely makes full power at 4ohms...so the 12D4 version would be unnecissary

You are absolutely correct. This time it was MY brain fart.

The proper configuration is a single 12D2 or a pair of 12D4's. Sorry about that ;)

This is going in a 2001 Saturn SL2

Well I suppose my question is answered...it won't make much of a difference at all except that it will cost me an additional $100. I don't know for sure but I'm assuming 138db is plenty for a daily driver. I guess we'll just have to see...
