welcome to the phorum!
they can do either quite well, how much space do you want to give up?
dedlyjedly and brenzbmr probibly have the most experiance with them her, they should be able to give you some box specs

2.8 ported per woofer and use a 30 square inch port per woofer
if you want hard hitting go about 38hz
if you want smoother and some extension then go with 30hz
i always loved my xmax woofers.

Hmmm...I'll have to build a ported enclosure for my set. I haven't played around with anything but sealed yet.

Welcome!
My X-MAX 15's are still one of my favorite sub set ups I've ever had. 2 in a 3 cu ft sealed enclosure with a zx500 running them. Acurate & tight very controlled. Not to mention consistantly able to hit 140+ db in my SQ car!

2.5 sealed with 150w works for me. I run 2 in my home theater.

i actually ran mine in 4 cubic ft sealed for two
it was smooth and yet very detailed.
but ported was much better for me.
