GRANITE enclosure

I've been asked a couple times about using granite in the build of an enclosure.

Granite SLAB-- Kinda spendy and HEAVY as shit but who else has one?
*2cm thick(3/4")
*20lbs per sqft
*3 cubez sealed (just for S&G)
*15" XMax (a woofer I have for testing

Having ALL of the peices being granite, the box would push 300 twinkies and need 2 dudes and a dolly to move. So my question is---

Which peices should be solid granite.......?

Well.... this year I'll be casting my new sub enclosure with concrete.
It is cheap, it is fairly simple to form a mould for, and it will be just as heavy as I want it to be.
Using granite is beautifull, but indeed expensive, and I can't build it myself; no option for me.
If you ever get something like that together, I'll be very interested in the making of it!

This is what I do. I sell granite, marble, slate, travertine and a bunch of other natural stone materials. I can get the peices cut for free and just pay for the material. My question is which of the 6 sides of the box should be solid granite cus they can't ALL be?

20x20x14 is what I was thinking.

Down firing? Or straight?

any of the new style epoxy's will hold, the question would be for how long...I get the concept of having a completly "dead" box, but at what cost ,weight, hassle, ect... how bout layering plywood with granite(kind of like making your own granite plywood), that would be more time consuming but will still allow you traditional building practices??

Epoxy will hold...trust me. And I'm doing braces and the whole 9 so it'll be bullet proof. 4 real!!!

See, the hassle is none. It will take more time to build and end up weighing a ton but it'll look awesome in my theater so it's worth the work.

I guess I'll just have to cut my own path with this one.......

3/4" thick is probably insane overkill for a granite enclosure.

I would think the base could be another material. Provided it's stong enough to support the weight. Then a piece of some exotic wood for the top. Would make a nice piece of furniture! Down firing for sure.

Drew out my plan today----

*Down firing

*Bottom / sides 3/4 MDF

*Top 3/4 Absolute Black granite 24"x24"

The material only comes in 2cm or 3cm and I figured that 3cm was too heavy (like it won't be using 2cm

).

I'm gonna start building it in the next couple weeks so I'll start posting pic's.

Hell yeah. I could picture a slab on granite on top of my cyclone ht box. I'd be able to use it as a coffee table!

How big of a peice do you need?

Depending on how big it is and where you are, I might be able to get you a chunk.....

Yeah, the baffles for the midbasses in the floor, and the top of the console, which houses 2 10" JL's. You can rest your arm on the console and not feel a thing!!! It's awesome, and a great sounding regular cab truck!!!

I thought of that but drilling small holes close to the edge in granite doesn't work out due to the materials quarts structure.

Damnit man, now you have me thinking about doing something like this! Here is my idear, how about a HT sub box/coffee table with a granite top??!! I could build something like my ABC box (here) but downfire that beauty and make false panels out of alder to match my entertainment center and top it off with the granite! What do you guys think about that? Of course this wouldn't happen until I buy a house, but it's fun to dream!!

Only DIAMOND drill bitz or a Water-Jet could do the job and I don't have a $300K water-jet to use.

I was planning to do a dual 15" XMax coffee table just like you're thinking but the wife brought up a VERY valid point.......KIDZ!!!!! My son would be all over it as soon as he could get into the room. It would look awesome though. Let me know how big of a peice you need and maybe I can get it for you.
