why dont component speakers come in 2ohms?

Post by capitolj80 »

why dont any component or coaxial speakers at least come optional in a 2ohm version? I understand that that wouldnt work so well using the head unit as the power source, but many poeple use seperate amps...is it just so that we all have to spend more on amps? :x or is there a functional reason for this?

I've wondered that before too.

Seems like somebody used to make a 2 ohm component set, was it Soundstream maybe?

image dynamics makes 2 ohm models. i think usd audio does as well. it is probably easier for companies to make a product for 99% of the applications out there. if you are using an amp like the pg xenons or the jl slash series, output is the same at either 2 or 4 ohms so there may not be much advantage in using a 2 ohm set. if you want more output get a speaker that can handle the power, a big beefy amp that can send the power, and beef up the electrical to keep up with the flow.

example:
titanium elite comps
xenon 200.4 bridged, front to left side and rear to right side.

Cost issues as stated, that 99% is more cost effective then that remaining 1%.

Another reason I've heard of is the THD% in an amp when you load it down more.

Don't forget the old Orion HCCA comps, they were 2 ohm as well.

ever wondered why atc mids (16ohm) sound so good? there's a good reason not to run at 2oms for the front end. distortion! of course it's unpractical to make components over 6ohms so 4ohms is a good compromise and easy to run.

i see!! i had a feeling that the THD might be more of an issue with satellite speakers than subs...and i guess the % of poeple using external amps as a power source is smaller than i thought...makes sense...thnx dudes

8ohm huh...I'll bet those are clear as bell and loud as hell (with enuff power)...only downside is having to spend more on amplification to meet their power handling at that load...ill bet still totally worth it for for the sound.

Seas mids and LPG tweets all run active being powered by a Xenon 100.4 In theory they are seeing 50 watts on each channel, but it sure sounds like a hell of a lot more! Seriously, this is the first time my front stage has been able to keep up with the sub stage. It sounds great!!
