6x9's VS 6 1/2's

Through the last few months I have read alot about how 6 x 9's sound like crap compared to round 6 '' and 6.5 '' speakers and I cant really confirm this for myself becauase I guess I never had a 6 x9 and a 6 1/2 side by side.

Whats everyones opinion ? I ask this because months ago when I replaced my front speakers with some Alpine 6 x9's (replaced factory 6 x 9's) I seen there was a choice of 6x9's and 6 1/2 speakers that would fit my dash. I think the Alpines sound ok , they are just the low level Alpine type somethings , they are by no means awesome and I figure if I am going to purchase the eclipse 7200 maybe I need to look into some better speakers :? I am very limited depth wise in the front dash so there is not alot of choices

I have some 6's I beleive in my rear doors but they are just some 20 dolla Pioneers and are basically a background noise

Put an equivalent 6x9 coax against the same 6.5", and you will probably not be bothered with the difference. What's more important is the technology that goes into higher end 6.5" components, that makes them sound better. 6x9's which incorporate the same level of technology are very rare indeed!

Some pretty good 6.5's.

Boston Acoustics
MB Quart
Image Dynamics

I've not heard of Focal, Soundstream lately.

I've not heard the rsd line or anything lately from PG, but PG used to "lack" in this department in several years back compared to the ones I listed above.

Bang for the buck, the RSD comps are amazing. They could use a new flagship speaker, but for 95% of people, I would say RSDs are more than enough. Actually, (comparing two different cars at least) they sound quite similar to the ID Chameleons.

The RSD comp subwoofers are a treat as well. I also preferred it over my IDMax.

depends on what you want. the 6x9's have more cone area. depending on brand will play lower hz. but like mentioned above, more technology and money goes into 6.5comps. ive always had good luck with bostons stuff. had the entry lvl 6x9's and recently purchased the next step up w/ neodymium magnet and dual tweets. but have yet to hear them ( sold the car with 6x9's hah)

I would say that the quality of the component crossovers will be far superior than the 6x9's,
but as for the speaker itself... it all depends on what you go with. I have a pair
of Pioneer Premier 2-Way 6x9's and a set of PG Octane ZR 6.5 comps in my daily
driver, and I honestly like the sound of the 6x9's over the Octane's. But then
again they are Octane's.

Thanks everyone 8)

I have a very shallow depth in my dash 6 x9 slots and even with the Alpine type s?(I am not sure) they barely fit  and even though Crutchfields calculator assessment works it was off for me.
I guess you get what you pay for the Alpine's were on sale for$ 49.00 bucks down from a $100(Thats Crutchfields full retail) they are 2 way and are a improvement over the factory , But they are not something I would show off

I also was curious to how those Pioneer 4 ways would sound? or if it would be overkill?

How do the PG 6 x9's sound? Any more 6 x9 recommendations?

boston acoustics. whether it be their entry level or top of the line, they make killer speakers. and if mounting depth is a problem go for their... SX95 6x9 coax. has the neodymium magnet for shallow mounting.

http://www.bostonacoustics.com/car/car_ ... uct_id=343

itsa 2way with dual 3/4" tweets. 92db sens. and plays down to 35hz. with a mounting depth of 2 and 9/16"

or they make an SL95. which is suppose to be their best 6x9. but they're as much as a pair of 8inch woofers would cost.

Those are some speakers I will definately consider. Most 6x9's I have seen barely have a frequency response under 50 hz if that!

Thanks for the link!

Also , Stipud you mentioned that it is rare to find a 6 x9 that has a build quality of a good component , can yju give me some 6 x9 examples ?? Brands??

Pioneer Premier DS-901 if you can find them. They play down to 22hz and
sound amazing doing so. The mounting depth may be too deep though.

Honestly, I have no idea... I would use 6.5's personally :)

the boston sl95 6x9's are suppose to have a slick crossover for a coax. this is from the quick spec on these

Contoured tweeter plane greatly improves on- and off-axis tweeter response
Model specific integrated muti-element crossovers

good reviews from their site too.
