RSD Vs. Xenon line?

Post by Generalg »

Ok I must be living under a rock... Just trying to figure out which line of amps is superior. But I'm completly new to Phoenix Gold, haven't owned any of their products in the past, with the exception now of the RSD1200:1. The RSD line better than Xenon? Or the other way around.

Trying to find an amp that would best suit my needs. Wanting to power a set of 6.5" RSDc components and 1 sub for my truck install. I have already bought a RSD1200:1 but now I'm thinking it will be to much power if there is such a thing for the 1 sub. The sub is a Dayton HO 10".

So back to the topic, would I be better off to get a Xenon 400:4 amp or a 500:4 RSD amp and bridge the two rear channels for the sub, using the front two channels for the components?

I will probably stick the 1200:1 in the daily driver with a pair of RSDc 10"...

Any thoughts? Does the Xenon have better of anything over the RSD? Did the RSD amps replace the Xenon line?

Thanks

rsd did replace xenon. i personally have no firsthand experience with either. from the talk around here.. the rsd stuff is pretty buff. biggest things ive heard bout the xenons is the load thing where it will put out rated power from 4-1ohm. and if i remember right its got some of the better crossovers.. but i think they're both triple darlington.. etc..

A single Dayton HO 10 would have trouble with 1500 watts... it's rated for a third of that. You could probably run a pair, if you kept the wattage clean (no clipping!).

The benefit of Xenon amps is that they play full wattage from 1-4 ohms. This means an X200.4 will put 200x4 or 400x2, regardless of the impedance. So your components get 200x2 on the front, and you can bridge the rear for 400x1. Your Dayton would have a much easier time with that. The RSD does not do this, so you will get approximately 100x4 or 400x2 at 4 ohms... half the power to your components (3 decibel difference), same power to the sub.

RSD amps also have less feature-rich crossovers, and no LPL on the four channel amps. The LPL is AWESOME for subwoofer volume control, so if you want to go with the bridged 4-channel, I hands down recommend the Xenon over the RSD.

the xenon line was designed to be a "higher end" amp line the the rsd.

they have better crossovers, features like XE.load (as mentioned above) are generally have higher power ratings, especially in the 2 and 4 channel amps (the large rsd amp is 87 x 4, while the xenon is 200 x 4) and are fan cooled

the rsd amps have a lower price point, and from a pure watt to watt standpoint are slightly more robust then the xenon. the boards have thicker traces. the rsd have higher comparable input capacitance.

it all comes down to what you plan on doing with them. if the power ratings meet your needs, and you are planning on doing your processing on different devices, there is no reason to choose the xenon's over the rsd's

Awesome info everyone, thanks!

So I would be sitting pretty if I went with a 200:4 Xenon and used 2 channels up front for the Components and the back to bridged for 400 watts to the sub, and I would only have to use one amp. That's exactly what i was hoping for!

So the 200:4 Xenon correct?

The Dayton is rated at 500watts RMS. Sounds about perfect for what I want.

I just got an RSD1200.1 for my sub but I have a Xenon 200.2 for my fronts and I highly recommend it. Great amp and as other's have mentioned great crossover. It also has never quit on me from overheating and out here in vegas that is something. I used to have a titanium 800.1 and in the summer months it would thermal and quit out on me but not the xenon. Great amp the 200.4 should be a great choice for you. Hopefully you can fine one I have not seen many on ebay lately.

I would not mind giving an X200.2 and X200.4 and X600.1 a go and see how the stack up against my ZED's. But the size is an issue for me in my daily driver. :(

Zeds are pretty nice I wouldn't see a reason to switch out. PG makes some great stuff but so does Zed.
