Hello... and directly some questions :)

Post by bretti_kivi »

Hello.

I'm impressed. A great selection of info is available here... and I was looking for some ideas. I hope you guys can help :)

I'm running at the moment a two-way + sub, actively, in the car. Now, I was looking for matching amps (at the moment an old Signat and a DLS CA41), and came across various QXs.
I can get hold of a QX150.4, a 90.2, 100.2, all for reasonable prices.
My question: is is possible to run a 3-way from these? The idea would be to use a 150.4 for midbass and mid, a 90.2 for tweets (as that also has both HP and LP with a real range), or is a 150.4 for mids and 2x 90.2s, one for mids and the other for tweets going to be a viable solution? At the moment, I'm just using Amp-internal crossovers.

None of these also have outputs, either, do they? So I need to have Ys or really have my 6 outputs...but even then, I'll need a Y for the Sub.

talking of which, how easy would it be to find a matching sub amp? I was looking for 300+W @ 4Ohms...

Tis would be an option, but then which ones without breaking the bank?

thanks!

The QX series was PG's lowest line at the time. It's the same as Octane-R gear, which was replaced with the current Ryval line. They sound good and are reliable, but they are not a big improvement over your Signat or DLS amps.

I recommend you try PG's higher end amps instead... M, MS/MPS/MQ/MAC, ZPA, ZX, ZXti, Ti, Xenon, RSD and any of the special edition amps. Failing that, the XS and Tantrum lines are right in between the two lines in terms of quality.

Something like the ZX, Ti or Xenon should be perfect for you, since they have VERY configurable crossovers. You could have your entire 3-way crossover setup on a single ZX450 or Ti500.4!

Welcome Dude! I would recommend a ZX-450 active on your fronts with a ZX-500 on your sub. This is a tried and true, reliable, high powered and relatively reasonable priced combo. These babys also have 24db per octave active crossovers capable of crossing your tweets/mids and sub perfectly. A person should be able to easily get a clean pair of these amps to your door for well under $500... maybe even closer to $400.

FYI a ZX-450 active on a pair of comps is magic...

.... and an M44? There's one in the 'Bay in Germany with serious scratches (which is very, very annoying)... but at least for the moment, it's still cheap.

Tis are unfortunately out of budget at the moment. They would also force me to raise the floor some... hmm... decisions, decisions.

and now it gets worse. There's a QX900.1 on craigslist for a very small fee. That would give me the power I need at a silly price... but it's in Washington state and I'm in Northern Europe.

that would also look extremely good - a 900.1, then a 150.4, a 90.2 and a 100.2 all laid out nicely below my new false floor.

The thing I really like about the QXes is that they're not very tall (2"), which means I could get away with a 3-4" false floor. That's really attractive and means also that I don't need *that* much air pumped through for cooling.

Just remember, these are entry level amps... never designed to be the highest sq.

Bfowler: I don't know. I've just sent a mail to find out if it's sold yet, where it is and that stuff. Would be excellent if it works out.... let's see.

I'm aware that the SQ isn't optimal. OTOH, I have a space problem and there's always improvements to be made. I also want the optics and am prepared to compromise. I know that's probably heresy, but, sorry, guys, I have to use my automobile in the real world ;)

OT: If you want to know what the car is:

^^ yes, I've just noticed it's not straight - I'll deal with that shortly.

Thanks for the welcome!

SQ will be fine. To be honest I have trouble telling the difference unless they are A/B switched with a good amp in the same car. As long as you are willing to do external crossovers of some sort (some decks can do this), then I think you will be happy enough with the QX amps.

Nice A2. We don't get them over here... in fact, they JUST brought over the A3.

thanks!

Ah yes, I ought to talk about the rest of the system: Seas ER18RNX mids, 27TFFNC/G tweets and a CSS SDX10 sub. Cabling by DLS. Source CarPC, via a Terratec Phase 26 USB with some fancy software doing XO and routing.
Mids, when I decide to go three-way, will probably be Vifa TG9s.

You won't get the A2, either, considering the _____ (insert word here) stopped making them three years ago. One of my other forums: www.a2forum.com - but that's in German, which probably won't help much...

Where will the odyssey go next? Can't wait :)

Deutsch ist mir kein problem ;)

But I don't speak a word of Finnish! Actually, come to think of it, I do! Sirkku palasokeri = sugar cubes.

I picked it up when I went camping through Norway and had to buy sugar for my tea... http://www.vaivaton.com/product/32-1-24091a

That's some damn nice gear by the way. Should sound sweeeeeet :)
