PG RSD12D Cutout Diameter Question

the cutout diameter for most 12" subwoofer enclosures (pre made ones) is 11".
in the manual for the RSD 12 D, it says the cutout diameter is 10 15/16 which translates to 10.9375", is there any performance hit if i put the RSD 12 into an enclosure with 11" cutout diameter versus the exact 10.9375"?
also im planning on getting a box size about 1.4 cuft, instead of the 1.2 or 1.8 (neither of them are popular pre made sizes, so its more cost effective going with the 1.4), anyone have experience with using a box of this size?
thanks!
p.s. i had no idea that you guys had a new forum, i was posting on the old phbb and was waiting for a reply for days, just now i discover this new forum! haha

a 1/16 of an inch equals 1/32 of a gap all the way around which is damn near perfect. your box will be fine. the 1/2" over hang will more then cover the gap

1.4 cubic feet should also be fine. Its in between the SPL and SQ ratings. If I were you, I would give it a shot (keep in mind a week or two of play is a good break-in), and if you want it a bit tighter, glue some styrofoam in the box to lower the volume down to the SQ levels

the 1.4 will be great.
^the 1.8 is actually the SQ recommendation. we have played with this sub alot, and you can even go up to 2ft for some seriously smooth lows

thanks, i read some threads on here that recommended the enclosure be filled with polyfill...i believe (errin/VWWW) the polyfill is suppose to be filled "loosely" till about the top of the subwooferenclosure
is that correct?
i was debating about 1.8 or 1.4 or 1.0
on the ____ website, they have 1.0 and 1.4pre made ones...if i were to custom build one it would eiter cost me a lot of time & money and (im newbie at building boxes), or if i order one from someone it would be a heft $130.
if i get the 1.4 (which i did, its actually 1.473), it would be 29.99 plus $15 shipping. so i save a good amount, which is essential for the stereotypical broke college student.
edit:
i have some questions. So my PG subfinally came in..it looks so nice...i just have a few concerns. The bostons i had..came with screws to screw in the subwoofer, as well as gaskets to seal the subwoofer surround against the box.
1) what kind of screws do i need since this came with no screws what so ever
2) what kind of gasket do i need for this sub if any? THe enclosure is carpeted.
second edit:
i like to point out that PG really needs to update the cutout diameter specs on their spec sheets...all the numbers are different...online is 10 15/16...on the box it says 10.91...on the manual it says 10.9....so thats a difference of .07 inches.

so does anyone know if i need to buy materials to create a gasket to prevent air leaks around the sub?
and also...what type of screws should be used to screw in these subs?

you dont really need a gasket, the sub already comes with a rubber ring that acts as one.
i always suggest using t nuts with bolts:
(see pic 12)

but 1.25 inch drywall screws also work fine for average weight subs.
try to be more conservative about taking the sub out of the box though. over time they will strip the wood if removed often

hey, regardless if its dry wall screws or T nuts
should i apply some silicone caulk to the screws so it seals the space around the screws to prevent air from leaking out?
the only downside i thought about this method is that, the silicone vapor could cause damage to the cone if some of it cures inside the box.
btw thanks for all the help so far, much appreciated!

a little update:
first off, THANK YOU SO MUCH BFOWLER for suggesting t-nuts. although i spent a good 2-3 hours learing how to use t-nuts properly, as i wasn't sure about hole size, how to get it into the wood and etc, well after learning about the heavy duty washer method (or in my case, i put TWO reg washers on the screw, and use the strength of two washers to pull it in, otherwise one by itself the edges start to tear off)
after using t-nuts (previously before bfowler's post i had no idea about t-nuts), i am so glad i did, it made removing and installing the sub such an easy task!!!
after fiddling around with my box + polyfill (of which i put 1.5 pounds TOTAL into a volume of 1.473 cuf.........
...........
so far the results are AMAZING!!! i was thikning about selling my old sub, but after hearing the RSD12 SING, i think i should just throw away the old sub. i can't even think about selling it without feeling guilty as this sub blows that one away BIG time. the way the rsd12 is performing so far is what i thought my old sub should have done! its been a good 2 years since i installed that sub...and all this time i "thought" i had bass...DAM i was totaly wrong.
Some notes: im not bashing bostons, but i think there was something wrong with MY particular sub and/or its enclosure.
i was looking for some reasons to upgrade and was actually browsing boston's newer lineup on ebay...and by chance i saw the same seller had listed some RSDs...and for SO CHEAP at that, $89 as compared to the $300 equivalent of boston.
i was absolutely shocked at how cheap the pg sub was listed, considering that PG is definitely one of "the" names in car audio. i was actually so surprised at the price that i thought there was something wrong with this sub, and so i scoured the net for reviews, comparisons, and the "catch" of why this sub is so cheap!
in the end i got the sub for 97 taxes + shipping included BRAND new from an online dealer. i am still shocked at how good this sub sounds for the low low price.
can you even get xplods at this price?
sorry guys im just ranting/raving and in complete ecstasy about how much better and more accurate my car sounds now.. i really am going to tell ALL my buddies to get this sub and will be patientily waiting to get an RSD COMP set.
PG has recieved yet another highly satisfied customer!

For my setup, having the right size sealed enclosure, a good tight seal between the subs and box, and the right amount of polyfill made all the difference in the world. I remember at first thinking, "Am I using way too much polyfill?" This was because my last install had a plexi front window and therefore I bypassed any fill. I now know much better! I used about the same amount of fill per cube as you and I was pretty much astonished with how great everything sounded. I'd seriously never go back to a ported box again.
