DIY motorized LPL44

Thanks for a great forum!

After some years without a killer car audio I'm now building with my old parts again.

It's going to be a challenge because I'm in a wheelchair. A have lots of friends to help me with the build, but, I still want to operate the car audio by myself. The sound source will be my laptop, but I also want to boost my bass with the lpl44. I love that thingy!

My plan is to buy a motorized 50.0k ohm potentiometer (is the value still 50.0k ohm when controlling a AX 204A crossover?). The pot will be controlled by an IR receiver with relays. I have a programmable IR sender on my wheelchair.

Is there anything I have to take in considerations regarding the potentiometer? What can I not use? Is the RJ11 wiring order black, red, green, yellow if you are viewing it from the top with the prong facing up?

Where is the best place to look for parts?

Hey Oyvind, welcome to the forum.

I love your idea of a 50kohm motorized pot! Unfortunately I have no idea where you would get one.

Here is the pin-out: http://download.phoenixphorum.com/TechS ... L_Info.pdf

so, stupid tech question: what does the LPL44 actually do?
It attenuates the gain set on the amp? or something else?

and Hello Oyvind from another northern-european newbie :)

Bingo. It attenuates the gain.

so when adding an LP44, I'm adding another connector and pot to the gain circuit... so quality would be good.

thanks for the link, that's really cool. €100 for a motorised pot is kinda steep, though!

The THEL components are really really nice. Nico has a very nice preamp constructed from their parts.

I don't think you really need audiophile grade pots for an LPL though, since it is not in the acoustic circuit.

You're right about that Tom!
I realized that later... yet motorized pots can be found in a lot of old cd players and such; only have to find the right value...

What about this pot?

Thanx for all the feedback!

Found this motorized pot:

And this IR controller kit from the same seller:

Total price is under €100! Can I go for that pot?

I guess you want pictures from the build?

By the way. Can I use the RJ11 6P4C plug, or is it to wide?

standard 4 pin telephone plug should do it ;)

MrM

ps: ive looked at the manual you sent me and it should be no problem to use the 1 second impulse variation. just feed the motor in the pot with a lower voltage and it should turn slower....

Motorized? Thats off the chain! Especially if you could use the the factory steering remote control interface on some cars for the after market head unit to adjust the control

Or you could just buy a old junk Aiwa or other home stereo where the volume conrtol was motorized and use that , maybe
