Will a Ti1200.1 run 2 12W7s at 1.5 ohm?

Post by STROKD »

So I used to have one of these to one 12W7, and I figure it was around 800-900 watts at 3 ohm. It specced at 1424 at 2 ohm.

It sounded incredible, but what I want to know is if there is enough juice in this amp to run two at half the ohm load. If in theory it should make around 1600 watts, will the amp run that, or will it smoke something internally? I am asking because I would like to run one amp for less weight, ease of install, and easier to tune. I have 2 subs and 2 amps, which I know would sound good, but if one would do well, and not underpower the subs or kill the amp, I'd rather do that and sell the other amp.

Comments? :?:

Should be fine. Since impedances are nominally rated, a difference of .5 isn't going to hurt the amp much. If anything you'll suck a bit more headroom out of it, but it should play just fine. It is 1 ohm stable after all :)

Very good! I didn't know it was 1 ohm stable, I thought it was rated at 2 ohm mono so thats what it should be... will this get more power at 1.5 ohms? say like 1700 RMS? or so if it did 14XX at 2?

By dropping the impedance below 2, you'll cause the amp to get a bit hotter, but it will limit itself to a safe power level. Running 1 ohms is "stable", but not ideal.

Do you think it'd sound better if I went ahead and ran two 1200s? that way they'd be at 3 ohm, not get as hot, and play more efficient?

Yes, if only for the added power you will get. Those amps are POWERFUL at 4 ohms. You could probably get 1200 each at 3 ohms, no problem.

Good luck with your charging system though. Those amps are class A/B so they are a colossal current draw.

Yea I know, one wasnt bad in my TL with the stock battery, alt, and a 1 farad cap... the voltage never really dropped.

I've got a redtop in the Cobra and I'll have a 20 farad powercore as well. Im sure it'll pull some serious juice cranked, but I mean, how long can you listen to it jamming with 2 1200s going to two 12W7s? 5 minutes? Im building a loud ass SQ car with front and rear Utopias, Im not looking to hit 150 db or anything... if it does, thats just bonus. I more want endless amounts of headroom and lots of speaker control. No muddy ghetto beats.
