Need to learn...

Post by 5.9Limited »

Hey all....Im looking to learn. I know some about the technical aspects of audio but want learn more and build on what I know...so any help is appreciated...post it here or post links to sites that are legit.

-What the deal with Ohms? I know some but want to really nail it down..
-what the differnce between running at 2 ohms, four ohms, and the ZPA's that run less than one ohm?
-does less ohms mean more power??
-can you wire or bridge a driver with a certain ohms rating ( 2, 4, etc,) to -run at a different nubmer of ohms?
- why would you do so?

-I've heard running an amp and driver with mismatched ohms can be disaterous...true? and why?

I know these may seem really basic for some of you..like I said, I do know some...but am aspiring to perhaps attain the level of you guru's. :)

any hlep is appreciated...

i just a a min or two so here is a start

Ohms AKa: Resistance and Impedance

Resistance is the opposition of the flow of current measured in ohms.

The higher the ohms (4ohms V 2 ohms) the higher the resistance.

If you reach 0 ohms that would be a dead short. That would be like taking your left and right speaker leads and twisting them together..... This is very bad for you amp. That is why most manufactures put overload protection circuits on there amps. In the event of a short or a subwoofer voice coil that fails the amp does not become damaged.

As for an amp ohm rating you do not want to go below the manufactures spec on this. If it (amp) lowest impedance level is 4ohms then you can not use a 2 ohm driver on that amp with out risking damage to it (amp).

But if you amp it rated to .5 Ohm like Orion HCCA amps you can use any load (ohms) from .5 ohm up to 4 (typically this is the highest you will see in mobile audio) without any problems. The amp will just produce less power at 4ohms and will produce the most at the .5ohm level.

Just keep in mind that the lower impedance level you run the amp at the more heat it will make. And it can affect it sound quality depending on the Co that made it..

That is for now I have to get going to work :( :( :( Hope this help a little.
