amp choices

Post by Thunderdome »

Hi could someone give me any suggestions for the perfect amp or 2 to power 4 rsdc104 subs in a sealed box I,m using my hcca 2100 on 2 pairs of mb quarts 5.25 up front but not to sure what to match with these subs from reading posts I believe there pretty good subs, oldschool or new doesn,t matter i,m not scared by oldschool quality gear any suggestions greatly appreciated.

With 4 subs and one amp, that puts you at either a 0.5 ohm or 2 ohm load. Those subs perform best with over 600w a pop, but you can easily go as low as 150 if you want.

So a modern 2 ohm optimized amp with 600-2500 watts would do the trick. Good 0.5 ohm stable amps are few and far between nowadays, but you might find yourself an old HCCA that fits the bill ;)

which newer amps would you look at? I was thinking of using my mps2500 that would rate 505 per side but want to use it with my other phoenix gear for a killer install in my summer car this spring I want to keep sound quality as well as spl and if I have to lose somewhere I would rather give up some cash and keep both :D

pardon my ignorance but these d class were just coming in when I stopped competing so I don,t know much about them do they really put out these output numbers? IE 1800 watts and is it comparable to the old ms series for sound quality and depth?

Yes, they will make the power no problem, and do it much more efficientlly than class ab amps.. That is why class d amps got so popular. Much smaller, and more efficient, although many still swear by ab for sq purposes. Class ds are no slouch though.

I sometimes wonder if the xenon 1200.1 was class ab  Its entirely to big for the power it makes in this period of time.

well, i cant bypass the rsd1200.1 internal 18db/octave crossover, however i do send a 24db/octave signal to it, its alot clearer/cleaner that way to me, and it hits phenominally well imho(supposedly the designer-i belive -of the old ms-had a hand in designing the rsd-but some1 correct me if im wrong?), and i am of the old skool, imho, i think the old zx series was the best, however, ive never had the m, ms series in any of my vehicles-heard lots of them, internally they appear similiar, but i know alot of the phorum members will buy old ms, and put new caps etc. in them, and im sure one day ill be in a posistion to p/up some old ms gear!!??

Hmmm I am going to have to look up some old freinds to see if anyone has some of this stuff I could listen to and yes the old ms stuff was excellent as well the mps series I used to run 4 12inch xs series subs in a sealed box off a single mps2500 in a 84 rx7 stock 75amp alternator 2-1 farad caps and I could achieve 141.7 db  not sure how that rates nowadays but it was pretty good back then

I use a linear power pa1 in line same as a pa11 5v pre out with switchable input, thanks for the offer but I,d rather go bigger on the amp or I may have to add another to reach the spl I,m looking for

edit: now if someone wants to part with a ms 1000
