Eq-ing my subs.

so I just installed my 2 10 inch RSDc's. running them off a 600.2 ti at 2 ohms bridged. just wondering what you guys do to eq your subs? both on the amp as far as the crossover freq. , sensitivity setting and bass as well from your head unit's crossovers' and slopes... this is by far the nicest system I've put in with way more mixing options than I've had in the past.. any suggestions are much appreciated.

I start by setting the low pass around 80 Hz...either on the amp or the HU...not both....do not mix signals

I would select the highest cut-off slope possible....my preference

thanks for the suggestion... i think the highest slope is like 250hz...sound right to you?? and on the amp i haven't touched it from where it was, which I think was alway down at like 40hz, so obviously its very very boomy, so Im looking to get it alot more punchy.

No, you want to stay lower on the x-over......40-120Hz.....I meant if you can select the x-over slope than go with the highest.....mine is always set between 80Hz and 100Hz

i.e. 24 dB per octave cut off slope

is your enclosure sealed or ported ?

Do not add any artificial means of bass boost......it will not give you any punch in your bass....it will only rob the sub of power you could be putting to it.

ok...my excelon has a few different effects... bass boost , highway sound, and supreme plus...and maybe another.. so I wont use any of those.

I have an excelon (X493) and I just use flat users response with no bass boost, eq settings or moving around center frequencies. IMO The different effects might sound good for a some songs, but it will sound like crap for others. Its too clunky to quickly change it.

I have my low pass set at 60 Hz in Excelon with my RSD10, its a good compromise. 80 Hz sound boomy to me. (I actually have my amp set to 70Hz in case I want to change it to 70Hz, X493 has 50, 60, 80 Hz low pass frequencies)

yeah, skip those.

have you found the sub-menu's?

if you press and hold the button, it takes you into another menu that lets you change the sub's phase, and crossovers.

yeah I spent a few hours with the unit and the manual after I installed it so IM pretty good with the menu's/submenu's ... I've got the sub crossover at 80hz, and the phase as normal...what would running a reverse phase do? I played with it some this afternoon and got it sounding better... a little more adjustment and she'll be dialed in. these things do pound though

Once your x-over and gain are set....it's really just a matter of getting the sound to your liking

Ive heard different theory's on "breaking in subs" . some say you should play em low for a while before you really hammer on 'em. some say there really is no pbreak in period to worry about , and that the sound is consistant through out the sub life. others say opposite...what say yOU??? not to change the thread or anything...just curious. still open to hear how you all mix and eq your subs.

I don't EQ my subs. Never liked the sound they produce that way. I do have the phase flipped however, because there's noticeably less cancellation with the front stage. Quite easy to do... flip it back and forth, and see if one is louder or sounds better. You might want to do the same thing with your midranges as well. I found my stereo sounded best with the right mid and subwoofer out of phase.

As for break in... it will happen as part of its normal use. If you want to accelerate the process, just listen to more music.

no worries there I'll be listening to plenty of music. and thanks for the phase tip, I"ll give that a shot and see what i think. overall the system as a whole sounds really nice. the rsdc's up front really set a nice stage, and sing well above the subs. very happy thus far.

I've got a similar setup with 12" RSdC subs and 6" RSd components. I know PG speakers aren't the top, but they provide such great price to performance ratio. I'm a totally satisfied customer. Not to mention the RSd components can take a beating. They've been unprotected in my kicks for quite some time, over a year, without getting beaten up or dented. Still work and sound great!

Although I have no real experience or formal training, I have to believe Tom here. It only makes sense that the spider gradually softens up over time. Some people may have their special ways of making that happen, but in the end working the spider is what "breaks in" a sub and anything that moves it (music!) will work towards that goal.

On a side note I'm interested in what comes next for PG in terms of speakers. I'm hearing 3-way RSdC component system... I don't really know though. That conflicts with information about PG switching to a number based product and product line naming scheme, however.
