diy sub. Looks tempting.

Over at diy, they are having a clearance, as Im sure some of you have seen. I am almost tempted to get a few of these for a sql install, for whenever I want to take out the big stuff

They seem to handle a load of power, and look good on paper.. Weighing in at 37lbs

I had one in my car. In my .60 cu ft enclosure it can barely handle my MS2125. I met the designer of the sub and he said it can handle 1k, but in a 1cuft enclosure....barely (kinda contradicts what my MS2125/60cu ft) The cone is paper thin. If you intend to use a small enclosure with a lot of power, be careful as it might warp the cone

The sub is VERY transparent but at a cost of impact. In fact the Xmax12 that's in my car at the moment kicks its ass in terms of impact.

All n all, the diyma ref12 was designed strictly for SQ, very full and deep but no punch imo.

The looks can be deceiving, this is one heavy mofo

Well more or less, I would have them in the 1.5 cube sealed, which should increase the power handling a bit. Do they drop pretty low?

They do play low.

They like very small sealed enclosures, but careful that cone is very fragile.

That cone being fragile pretty much steers me clear of getting them. I am not easy on my subs period.

I'm getting one. 1cuft @ 300w sounds like it should be a good fit for it. Very curious to see how it sounds! DIYMA puts a lot of value on how their subs sound on paper... so here's one that was designed to sound good on paper from the start! Should stack up nicely against the "sounds good because of voodoo magic" RSD competition.

The motor structure looks a lot like my DD cluster Magnet. The base and basket however are not the same..

So if I buy some RSDC's I get free voodoo magic? Or do I have to pay extra? Are you hinting that the numbers on the PG's don't indicate they'd play very well?

I am still shopping subs for a change of impact... I feel I need more.

The guys at DIYMA bench tested bdubs' RSD subwoofer, and it graphed very poorly. Keep in mind this is after he wrote his big review, placing the RSD first against many others:

And by that time, the car stereo press had also given it rave reviews as well. So they don't "sound good on paper" but they certainly sound fantastic otherwise. I am not sure if the RSD competition sub is the same thing, but I would guess it also wasn't built just to graph nicely, but to sound nice instead

The DIYMA sub was designed to sound good on paper. It has all the technical mumbo-jumbo (shorting rings, etc) that makes subs graph well. So I am curious to see how these two polar opposite subs compare to each other. It will be a tough challenge though, since the RSDC is hands down the best thing since sliced bread IMO
