Some sub install help please?

Post by baddog671 »

I have been looking for some information on how to install my subwoofer correctly and was directed to this site becuase most of my components are Phoenix Gold items. I bought a sub about 3 years ago but never got around to hooking it up. It's a Xenon 12D4, and it's been sitting in it's box until just tonight. I know it's nothing special, but it seems pretty respectable and a quality build, so I'd like to get it set up correctly.

My current set-up is kind of piece mealed, but I've never had much money and didn't do everything at once. I have a 98 Mustang and when I first got the car I pulled the 4 factory speakers and replaced them with Pioneer 6x9. Later on I installed a set of 5.25" Phoenix Gold component speakers (can't remember what style, I'll look later) in the rear and left the Pioneers in the front becuase the housing doesn't allow round speakers. The fronts are still controlled by the factory amp, but the rear component set is controlled by a 8.0:4 Phoenix Gold Octane amplifier. So, yeah, it's kinda crude but whatever. After I get out of med school I will get a newer car and I can start over fresh, and with good money to back my hobbies. When I do get rid of the car, I'll probably remove this project to keep, but I'll just let the speakers and stuff go with the car. I can't really remove the components anyways becuase I built a fiberglass rear deck tray to house them....

Ok, so first off, about the box I need to build. 98 Mustang trunks are very limited and my current sealed enclosure thoughts are 14"x22"x12", which figures out to roughly 1.52ft^3 internal volume. My little pamphlet says 1ft^3 for SPL, 3ft^3 for musical. I'd like a good balance, so does this seem ok, or should I try to bump it up to 2ft^3 for a better comprensation?

Ok, amplifier selection. I'd like to stick with another Phoenix Gold amplifier, I like brand loyalty when having multiple components, but unsure what to get. I don't need anything excessive or expensive, just enough to push the subwoofer with it's 500watt RMS. I assume I only need a 2 channel. Also, in regards to the amplifier, this subwoofer is dual voice coil, so it has 2 power terminals. How should I wire them to optimize power input? I've been out of the game too long to remember these wiring specifics, but can't you "bridge" the 2 amplifier channels to gain maximum output...?

Power cord and wiring. I "ebay'd" this and found a complete Phoenix Gold installation kit, does this look ok? Either that or I'll just pick up a Skocsh kit at Walmart...

That's the majority of it. Sorry that was so long!

It's a great amp! And think of it this way...is that you will have extra headroom for future installs as well....Not to mention the amp will match the subwoofer....same series...xenon.

Nowwww if your component set is Xenon....that'd be fantastic! :)

What do you mean by headroom? Do you mean, like, if I get a better sub in the future, it will still have well enough juice to power it aswell..

The comp set arent xenons, but I cant remember exactly. I remember they have an "R" on the cone, but its not the Rsd or whatever that model is. The word "radicle" is sticking in my head...

I PM'd him

Ok, so if the amp has only 1 output terminal, and the sub has 2 input terminals, how should I wire that? 1 wire from the postive on the amp to the positive on the sub, and then link it to the next positive on the sub..and same with the negatives? I assume that would be "in series" wiring? Wouldnt that supply the one coil more than the other? and does it matter which terminal is first?

I have so many questions guys :(! What gauge wire? Like 10g?

Hello, this is me and I just pmed you...tristan has expressed an interest but I am not sure that he wants it definately. How serious are you about purchasing the amp....if you are very serious and can pay now I'll see if tristan wants it.

Unfortunetly I only have like 40$ in my Paypal, so I can't pay for it immediatly. This is kind of a "spur of the moment" thing for me...

Either way, I am looking for a good amp and am very interested if this is ideal for my sub...

This just totally changed all my ideas and has given me more doubts. Now what size power cables am I going to need? Wouldn't I need something huge like 1-2g? I already have a 800w amp on that battery, isn't this going to drain my battery in no time? How much amps is this, wouldn't it kill my alt?

It's amazing how complicated a single thing can be. I might as well wipe the slate clean becuase I'm back to zero....

heheh...wow...sorry...ya headroom meaning you will have more power than you need for the sub currently.
Depending on the way you want to run your sub:
