elite 12 started smoking!!

Post by bass junkie »

I got an elite 12 and I am running 1300 watts rms. The first day I had it I was breaking it in and decided to turn it up for one song. Half way through the song it got hot and started smoking. Quite disappointed in the power handling of this sub. There is no way it can handle 1 600 rms

If its rated for 600rms and you ran it w 1300 then theres part of your prob.

Also were you running a clipped signal to the amp?

Ive ran 100-250w rms over subd ratings and nvr had an issue.

It's supposed to handle 1600 rms not 600 and no clipping

Oh sorry mis read that.

Well if the signal isnt clipped then the only thing i know that would cause it is could be a bad box design and/or a faulty sub.

I am aware that the newer ti elite subs have had some defaulty issue like led's falling out of the cones.

Is this the newer elite sub or the first gen ti elite sub

elite 12 started smoking!!

Yup. I've run 8 of them now, and two were bad from day one. First one did the same thing, got hot and the coil split in half and seized in the motor, the second had one bad coil right out of the box.

I have 6 elites currently running. And I can tell you they do handle there rated power. I was frustrated for awhile about the two bad subs I had, but the one I do have working now all perform great.
I currently run six elite 12d4's with a pg "the one" I have a 7th sub on the shelf waiting to find number 8. Then I'll be splitting the subs up, four subs to each of the two " the one " amps.

Unfortunately I believe the original ti elite is a much better sub than the new one. Almost wish they just remade the original badged as the new elites instead of what they have.

I agree with Treesive, as much as I love my new elite 12's, they do look cheep with the plastic looking cones. A beefier looking old school elite sub would have been a better choice for the money the new elites cost. Also the fact that the old elites were serviceable made them worth the money.
I am disappointed that for the money pg's top model sub is completely disposable.

I'd rather spend an extra $100 and know I can get rebuilds or replacement cones.

Got it replaced with the gen 2 and I am more then satisfied! The whole speaker is made of a better quality it also stands taller and has a larger magnet. No more cheap plastic look either. The dual spiders are incredible and so is the spl and sq. Best sub out there for the money no doubt!

I had a elite.1 on two ported elite12ds 2.25 tuned to 32hz probably 6 months never had a issue . I really love the hit of the 1st gen elite there a elite2 sitting at the shop can't wait to get it in a box in the soundroom. The new elite does look a lot better a lot taller and can fit in a normal 12 box hole where the 2012 elite could never fit in a prefab box without cutting some wood! If it sounds any better than the last gen sub I found my new favorite sub...I got to hear the new ti3 12s with a 5 channel dd amp about 1000 watts they really did sound good but wanted more.... I'm impressed with the whole new sub line so far hope the elite.2 lives up to its looks.....
