Simple Fiberglass Enclosure

Simple Fiberglass Enclosure

First, tape off the area you want to form

Build a quick jig, and superglue it together
Image

Add mat and resin thoroughly (used three layers of mat in this case). Once dry, remove from mold, and trim.
Image

Set up the speaker baffle and superglue it into place
Image

Stretch a polyester molding material over it, then saturate well with fiberglass.

Rough sand the box with 25 grit.
Image

Fiberglass mat (three layers) to the surface.
Image

Add bondo. Since I have a power sander, I coat the whole thing.
Image

Sand it down, test fit the enclosure
Image

Trim with your choice of material (vinyl)
Image

And we are all done!

Well yes, that's all it is... but it's not what it is that interests me, it's how well built it is. It's the attention to the details and the way you integrate it.

I'm sure a small enclosure like this is nothing to think twice about in your line of work but to a noob like me, that's a part of the pinnacle of installation skill.

jim if you dont mind me asking how much does an installer of your caliber charge per hr? Im guessing you charge per the hr.


JW as no one close to me has to skills you do.
Can one send others to war if hes not willing to go himself?

I can't speak for Jim, but in my past big jobs were quoted up front using rough calculations and the hours were bid into that. In most cases the hours were way under what was actually worked. So bigger jobs were priced more reasonably than a two day job.

I personally figured $75 per hour on basic fab work and $90 on full custom jobs.
I think we've established that "Ka Ka" and "Tukki Tukki" don't work.

So it takes about a day to make a fiberglass box...

$75 * 8 = $600 for a box

How do people have so much money to throw around?

lol not that I could charge that for my kicks...but if i could ID BE RICH BITCH

took me ~ 10 hrs to do those.

$900 for KICKS I WISH


but to be honest for the job those guys do tom IMO well worth it if I wasnt a college student only making 10 k a year (not bad for summer job)

a glass project I abandoned, and redid from scratch twice... this is the closest it's been to actual install ready LOL... I could vinyl it at this point... but don't have vinyl, so I painted it silver instead :lol: which btw doesn't match my truck... I just had it around... I didn't even primer it as it's hammertone paint...

If you are gonna vinyl or suede an enclosure, is the sanding and bondoing all necessary?

yes, it is important, and the reason vinyled black because the top is black, and the seats are black leather.. I could of carpeted it... but WTF it was a simple project

yeah i had to learn how to wrap a box back in 1989 :D

had to start some where..... 8)

would of grad in 87, but wanted out of school, it was pretty much a review in my high school years, I was taught most of it in a private school (K-7). But i always wanted to join the navy, so i said get me out of school and i will join.... and that is what happened, took the GED and scored silly high, I could of got my HS diiploma in the 7th grade :roll:

If you don't have it almost perfectly smooth vinyl and suede will show the bumps and valleys under it. Covering a box with carpet you can get away with a little more imperfections as they won't show.

I want to design something glass for my VW.

I am afraid it seems easier than it is but I am dying to try it. I mean once I frame the shape, it seems pretty straight forward...I may be able to use black carpet and have it look nice, I mean my interior is black carpet anyway.

The sanding and bondoing seems like like the worst of it.

Take a tip from a pro - spend more time shaping the filler whilst you're applying it, then you won't need to do so much sanding ;) :)
