M100 into 2 ohm mono?
M100 into 2 ohm mono?
Cant his amp handle that, I see on amp guts it says it can but doesnt give a spec for it. What kind of power should it do at 2 ohm mono if it can handle it?

I am looking for something for my sub which is a dual 4 so its got to be 2 or 8 ohm monofuzzysnuggleduck wrote:This is 100% anecdotal but my M100 failed not long after I started running her at 2 ohms mono. It was running really hot.
My opinion? Meager difference in power output isn't worth the risk.

You can run it at 4 ohms stereo if you have the knowledge to gain match your channels but if you're just looking at which amp to buy there is likely a better match for your sub in another amp.scottn29 wrote:I am looking for something for my sub which is a dual 4 so its got to be 2 or 8 ohm monofuzzysnuggleduck wrote:This is 100% anecdotal but my M100 failed not long after I started running her at 2 ohms mono. Does the M100 have independant gains for the left and right channel?fuzzysnuggleduck wrote:You can run it at 4 ohms stereo if you have the knowledge to gain match your channels but if you're just looking at which amp to buy there is likely a better match for your sub in another amp.scottn29 wrote:I am looking for something for my sub which is a dual 4 so its got to be 2 or 8 ohm monofuzzysnuggleduck wrote:This is 100% anecdotal but my M100 failed not long after I started running her at 2 ohms mono. Haha! Caught me! I didn't check but now that you mention it, it does in fact have a single master gain control on the outside. Which only makes sense. That's twice in two days that I blurted shit out without thinking!scottn29 wrote:Does the M100 have independant gains for the left and right channel?
Still, I would check to make sure the amp is actually gain matched internally before hooking up a DVC to it in 4 ohms stereo.

i just meant compared to 4ohm stereo. i think 8ohms would be a bit of a waste alsoscottn29 wrote:I dont think I would be happy with it at 8 ohm mono if its putting out half of its power at 4ohm. i am one of those that like headroom in his amps. You do realize that half power is only a 3dB difference, right?scottn29 wrote:I dont think I would be happy with it at 8 ohm mono if its putting out half of its power at 4ohm. i am one of those that like headroom in his amps. Yes I do realize that, but you also have a higher chance of clipping when you push it hard with less power, thats why I always like headroom, cleaner signal is always a good thingstipud wrote:You do realize that half power is only a 3dB difference, right?scottn29 wrote:I dont think I would be happy with it at 8 ohm mono if its putting out half of its power at 4ohm. i am one of those that like headroom in his amps. Technically you have more "headroom" at 8 ohms than you do at 4. The amp is capable of putting out more power, but because of the load/gains/etc, it isn't. You are running the parts below their maximum levels, so when the occasional dynamic musical spike comes along, the amp is able to take it in stride.scottn29 wrote:Yes I do realize that, but you also have a higher chance of clipping when you push it hard with less power, thats why I always like headroom, cleaner signal is always a good thing
Not that more power is a bad thing either, in fact, it is much more noticeable than headroom.
