9m Question

Hey I have a question. My Ti9ms dont exactly fart but I can kinda hear the speaker moving. It kinda buzzes along with the music but it is more of a buzz like I can hear the dustcap moving along with the music...hope this makes sense to someone. Kinda like if you made the sound of a machine gun with ur mouth by flickering ur tongue against ur front teeth.

What could cause that? Too small of an enclosure...well Errin once told me you could essentially tape off the basket of 9ms and mount them so I don't think it could be too small, but too large?

I am confident I am not overpowering them because the gain is set way below the root equation gain that the speaker should be able to take but it's just annoying enough where I feel something isn't right. If I turn the amp gain down to a point I can no longer hear the moving of the dustcap, then it is way too low and you can't really hear the 9m.

I feel like I am not using the 9ms to there full potential because I worry about this buzzing and don't want to turn the gain any higher bc the buzzing will obviously get louder the more the speakers move.

No he didn't say it would like that, I was just asking him if the enclosure could have had anything to do with the 9m I blew a while back. I asked if my enclosure could be too small and then he said that...def not that they would like that : ).

So if it is tinsel slap which sounds like an accurate diagnosis for what I am describing, that can cause them to blow right?

So are u thinking I do have the gain up too high?

What causes tinsel slap?

What steps can I take to reduce this?

can reduce the length by cutting and resoldering... but you have to be careful doing that.

I don't especially want to mess with that. If it is tinsel slap, what has caused it? One of the 9ms is very new and the other is a few years old. They both make this noise.

Both? At the same time? Installed years apart?

I would then suggest a shitty audio signal where it's still processed in stereo. Do you have another set of semi equivalent drivers to test with? This would immediately determine if the failure is the speaker itself. I doubt it since both display the indentical symptom.

I do not have another set to test in place...I mean I have RSd midranges I haven't installed in my vw yet but they are not very similar so I cannot imagine it would help me diagnose anything.

Are you suggesting that my audio signal might just not be strong enough? I have a pioneer 7600 and it is supposed to have 5volt 100 ohm preouts. I know that is max performance but the signal shouldnt be very poor.

How does anyone else have their 9ms bandpassed? I have a Ti 951 set. It is using the passive xover for the mids and tweets and my 9s should be bandpassed about 60 to 150 Hz. You guys think I should change that bandpassing? Could the higher range be causing this effect? Should I possibly try to keep it bandpassed more like 60 to 100?

Perhaps 60 to 150 is just asking the driver to do too much. I know the manual shows that I should bandpass with these frequencies but maybe that wasn't the best possible setup.

What he's saying is to hook up the rsd mids in place of the 9m, temperarly. If you still have that same sound, it's not the 9m's, it'll be in the audio path somewhere. If you don't have the same noise, it's the 9m's.
