LOGICAL FALLACIES (please read everyone)

Post by bdubs767 »

In order to have better discussions in more technical threads about audio I thought I would post Logical Fallacies that many people commit including myself. In my opinion if people are aware of these fallacies we can create better discussions about audio based upon substance not fallacies.

TO START:
Definition of an Argument- An argument is the reasoned presentation of an idea that is supported by evidence that is assumed to be true.

Premise- Is a single or series of thoughts used to support the conclusion.

Argument Ad Hominem- An argument based on name-calling or attacking a person directly of indirectly. The attempt here is to avoid discussing the issue at hand.

Bandwagon Appeal- An argument that implies one should agree with the premise because a celebrity or a majority agrees with it.

Begging the question- When a conclusion is presented as part of the premise.

Circular Reasoning- The use of a statement to support itself is circular reasoning.

Either/ or Reasoning or Oversimplification- This logical fallacy occurs when the writer assumes that there can be only one cause or one solution to a problem.

False Analogy- An argument that compares two objects that have too few similarities to establish a basis for a good comparison.

Non sequitur- When one reaches a conclusion that does not follow or is not warranted by the evidence offered.

Post Hoc; Ergo Proter Hoc- When one draws a conclusion based only on the assumption that the time sequence is sufficient proof for a particular deduction.

Slippery Slope- The writer assumes that because one minor fact is true, then, despite any further proof, a larger premise must also be true.

Meh. I used to frequent a political forum. I'm an expert at all of those.
