We both believe that prescribed gift giving days (christmas, valentines day, etc) are a load of consumerist BS, so we give gifts spontaneously instead. It means a lot more when you give it for a reason other than "happy X day!", as if that day was somehow magically different from any other.
You and I could not agree more on this subject. My girlfriend is very much so against canned gift giving holidays such as this. Last year when I did not give her anything all her co-workers told her how terrible that is and how much of a bad boyfriend I am. This coming from women who on occasion would arrive to work with black eyes or worse from “falling down the stairs on accident”.

Add in that I am helping pay for my girlfriend’s schooling when her bills get tight, and helping her down a path which will make her debt free like me, hopefully prior to our marriage in a month, I don’t see myself as a very bad boyfriend and she seems to agree.

Her and I give each other gifts everyday, the gift of trust and the gift of freedom. I now have a cell phone (my boss was pissed off that I did not own any phone cell or land, so he got me one), and I never call my girlfriend and she never calls me. If she needs me to pick something up on the way home from work, then she will call, or if I am wondering if she wants me to make dinner or not I call her. Some of her co-workers call or are called by their spouses every hour all day long. Man that is bullshit if you ask me.

One of my best friends was married on valentines day. He felt the same about commercialized holidays. But, as it turned out, his wife was expecting something and when he got her nothing for the anniversary/v-day he found himself locked-out of the house.

It took 2 days and a couple dozen roses to get a set of keys to the new door locks.

Ouches....

If thats the case tho....the reason why they got married on Vday....is probably to make it more romantic....

So to add that it is an Anniversary and V-day.......and to not do/get anything.............not good... hehe...he set himself up by getting married on vday!

Worse case scenario he can argue the vday part, but not the anniversary part...thats unacceptable especially with an EASY TO REMEMBER day!

That's what I tried telling him! She was definately gonna be looking for something romantic.

Needless to say, we ride the hell out of him every year now. You know .. "How's your lock picking skills these days" .. "It's awefully cold this time of year to be getting stuck outside" .. "maybe you should pack some extra clothes"
