I will add to the Ti discussion that the mini-sink design which premiered with the ZPA's and ZX'x is actually an ingenious design. The amps have 1/10th the heat sink area of a comparably rated conventional sink design, and honestly do not get much warmer. The "little pieces" of metal you speak of add up to a lot of surface area, and they are oriented in such a way that they radiate the maximum amount of heat possible. Also, the isolation plates and the mini-sinks are all anodized and have no dielectric barrier required in conventional designs to electrically isolate the components from the sink. This adds up to much greater thermal efficiency than a comparable conventional sink.
I do love the old M/MS/MPS amps, but I also love the small footprint vs. power output for the ZPA/ZX/Ti amps. I wish the Ti had kept the gold boards, but other than that I have no complaint, and I have something like 15-20 of them...
