A hood pop?

Post by bdubs767 »

Well w/ my new kicks I will need to move my hood release since it's in the kicks. The best idea I can think of is to wire up a hood pop, since I doubt I can move the stock release and kept the wire tension.

So how the would I go about doing this, as I don't know a thing about wiring up pops.

Disassemble your current pop, go to the junk yard and procure a release handle for a toyota PU it mounts with two screws. You'll possibly need to mod the cable a bit but you can get the cable at Lowes/HD. Then just mount the release under the dash somewhere.

I would do away with the hood release cable and put a door solenoid commonly used for popping doors that have shaved handles. You mount the solenoid under where the release is and have the cable from the solenoid pull the release just like the original cable would have done. Wire it up to an unused output on your alarm so you can pop it from your remote.

You could get the second one however you'd need to fab some install parts.....

Take a look at SPAL or the "Hoffman Group" for a a solenoid or even visit your local install bay and pick one up, in most cases you are looking at $25-35 for the parts.

The Toyota release is by far easier to deal with FYI, the solenoids have issues quite regularly.

The hoffman group is where I usually get most of my stuff from www.autoloc.com thats their website they used to be autoloc before lumping together with the hoffman group. But their stuff is more expensive than that first ebay link you posted. I think for a hood pop though you could get away with an 11 pound solenoid if you wanted to but I would at least get a 15 pound. The release on my truck takes 8 pounds pull measured using a fish scale.

x2. the cable/mechanical method will be much easier to modify let alone more reliable than swapping out a portion of the hood release system for something electrical.

okay so how would I go about lengthing the cable? Basically how would I attack another piece of wire to the one that already exsits, and have it hold up?

Get a nut/bolt combo with two washers and set the bolt in a vice then break out the hack saw a cut it down the middle so that you can slide both cables into the groove then tighten the nut onto the bolt. The other option is you can get a brass standoff again set it in a vice then drill a hole through it large enough to fit both cables into it, then tighten the proper size bolt into it.
