He was testing new forum software (phpbb3 vs the current phpbb2.x). There are some shortcomings in the new software that make it less suitable. Of course, there are also improvements but I think he's determined phpbb2.x is still better suited.

Yeah, PHPBB2 has a few mods I need to make this place work, otherwise I would have switched over by now.

Appearance is easily changed with theming, Tom was testing functionality.
