Sub hook up

Post by maxdog03 »

I have a 10" Oz Matrix Elite D4 sub that will be powered by a PG Tantrum 300.2 running in bridged mode. Will this amp be stable at 2ohm in bridged configuration? I'm going to be looking for a new amp and likely look for either a PG Tantrum 1200.1 or maybe JL Audio 500.1 for the future but just want to make sure I won't hurt the 300.2 in the mean time.

i really dont recommend it running it at 2ohms.

IF you give it its own 4awg cable, and install some cooling fans for it, it wont die, but its still not ideal

i would just wire it up for 8ohms if its a temp setup until you get your 2ohm amp

Thanks. I have the manual and I see where it says minimum load bridged is 2 ohm but I was looking for some real world experience doing this as I don't want to fry an amp. What are you looking to get for the 1200.1 (don't need or want the end caps)? I have a pair of 300.2's that I would need to sell first and I'm already running another 300.2 for the main speakers.

ya know...you could run a 300.2 on each coil!

I was actually thinking that as a possibility but wasn't sure if that would work right. What if the signal sent by each amp was just slightly different? Any suggestions on the best way to wire it? Would I Y each sub output from the deck into each amp and then run each amp bridged into an individual coil? I'm running a Kenwood Excelon kdc x791 deck that has an internal crossover so I assume to ensure both coils are seeing the same crossover frequency I should run the crossover from the deck rather than trying to get each amp at the same frequency. Any help by those that have done this type of setup would be appreciated.

I think I,d go with the 1200 as it will be a lot less complicated to set up and then if you add another sub later your set 8) that amp will pound that sub silly, I had one hooked up to two 15,s and it hit hard

Well because of trunk size in a Mustang convertible I'll never add another sub. I'd probably go with a PG Xenon 600.1 or a JL Audio 500/1 if I can turn a pair of Tantrum 300.2's into one of those. I think the 1200.1 would definitely be over kill now that I think about it as this will be just a simple clean system that can get reasonably loud.
