what age is it cool for your Teen to drink with parents
My 16yr old is begging me to let him try Jägermeister!!! WTF.. its his b-day...at first I said HELL NO,but then started to think, what age is it cool/ok to drink with the parents AT HOME?
At what age did you drink with your parents?
At what age did you drink with your parents?
Square 1
I started drinking casually in bars in Germany and Holland at 15/16... anyone over 14 can drink beer or wine, and 16+ can drink anything! Truth be told I don't get why the drinking age is so high everywhere else? I'd rather my kids get used to drinking before they start driving!
At home in Canada, my parents treated me the same way as I was in europe. I could drink at home or at my friends house when I was 16, but I couldn't get a car until I turned 18. They got me a bike and a bus pass to get around. By the time I was 18, I had absolutely no problem limiting my alcohol intake, while alot of my peers basically became alcoholics and drove drunk all the time.
As for the US 21 year old drinking limit? WTF! You're old enough to have 7 years driving experience, be able to vote, go to war, or have sex with an 80 year old... but you're not old enough to have a fucking beer? Ludicrous. At that age they are going to be drinking regardless, so they should be doing it in a safe and controlled manner... 18 at the very latest IMO. Setting the limit at 21 is totally repressive.
So heck yes give him some Jager!

In the states things are looked at differently. Because of the way it's looked at kids have to sneek it. They continue to do so at such a rate they tend to abuse alcohol. Things go doen hill from there.
I've seen to many times first hand was alcohol abuse can do. It's hard at your point in time because if he gets some now, he'll want more and more and start sneeking it if he can't. But if you don't, he might sneek it still.
The best time to let your kids, IMHO, is when they're 12ish. Their taste buds aren't fully developed and it will taste bad and they wont want it for a very long time, if all goes well, by the time they're responsible.
I hate beer w/a passion, but liquor is another story. I drink in moderation. Only on Sat nights when I'm on-line playing w/my friends. That's the ONLY time I drink it, and it's only a small mixed drink. Dr. McGillicuddy's Vanilla Liqueur and Coke, Not Pepsi!
I went to school w/some guys (brothers) that fell into this alcohol abuse thing so much so that, in all honesty, if they didn't have one drop of alcohol for a week straight, they'd still fail a breathalizer. I'm dead serious in saying that.

I say 16-17 is fine. Just make sure it is around you and teach them about responsibility with alcohol. I agree though with no later than 18. If you're old enough to die for your country then by all means you should be responsible enough to drink!

we were drinking "shandy" at ..11? something like that. Beer really only started at 16 or so and then it was what we could "find". Was a relief to get to 18 and be able to buy my own.
I'm with Stipud on this one. My own wants to know what the "adult" drinks are and has already smelled them and gone "YEUCH!" which is a pretty good start IMO.
Beer is just beer. Drink one and then stop. It's not very easy, but practice makes perfect. And with that, I mean one in an evening. After two, it's harder to stop, but it's quite good that I get forced into these things by trains. Germany really taught me how to drink properly - slowly and watch the sun come up again

Jager tastes like poo anyway. What ever you do, just make sure that the wrong people don't find out about it. It's your kid, use your judgment, is what I believe. The law is another story. Your kid tells their friends, their friends tell their parents to use this as an argument why they should be able to try alcohol at home. Then the fanatical parent of the other kid calls the cops. Don't want to scare you but it is too real these days that people just don't mind their own damn business and then you are in court.
Prost! Skål! Salut! Cheers for all the rest of us English speakin' folks!

I think jeager would be a perfect introduction to drinking. One shot of that and I bet it will be a little while before he asks for anymore.
I was out of hs before I started and probably for the best. As much as we would like to think that they would not like it or would do it responsibly you are introducing them into it and more then likely it will continue from that point.

what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.
Yes, that's when I came to love it! The Germans rarely drink it in excess though... it's more of an aperitif. We even collected a bunch of seasonal herbs and made our own while I was out there! It was delicious!ttocs wrote:and did you at 16? I grew to appreciate it strangely after throwing it up a few times......

I don't think i've ever been drunk on (only) Jagermeister. Seems wrong to me. Come to think of it, I don't think i've gotten plastered on hard liquor once since I graduated university...

I had my first drink when I was 24... guess I was a late bloomer. It was always easier/better for me to be sober and driving.
Easier to get drunk girls home and into bed...
Easier to remember names and locations of said girls...
Easier to get away when said girls parents or boyfriends came home...
Just easier.
on the flip side, there are a fair number of girls that woke up in the morning saying to themselves "I was so drunk last night, why does my mouth taste like sh*t and my ass hurt?"

I had my first full drink when I was 13 I had been cutting neighbors lawns for a few hours one day at the lake and it was like 30 degrees out so when I got back to the cabin dad gave me a beer I didn't really enjoy it that much but it did quench my thirst. My parents never had a problem buying beer for me when i was 16 as long as they knew where I was and nobody was driving and I could call anytime during the night for a ride home for me and my friends. I had tasted beer and some hard stuff when I was alot younger and my parents let me taste it knowing I wouldn't like it and be out trying to get drunk when I was 13 Thats probably the best thing they ever did was let me try the awful stuff at a young age.

I wouldn't start him on anything name brand that he might actaully like, I would go straight for the cheapest tequilia, wisky and anything else that would make him not want to do it again.
fix the kid a 3-wise-men or a harley and you should be safe for a little while...

this! put the fear of booze in him. you could explain to him (and this is mostly true) that taste buds change every 7 years, so thinks you used to not like begin to taste better. so that why the 3wisemen drink isnt good to him yet....his taste buds havnt changed (which is incidentally 21!)ttocs wrote:I wouldn't start him on anything name brand that he might actaully like, I would go straight for the cheapest tequilia, wisky and anything else that would make him not want to do it again.

I never cared much for alcohol, and after my brother started drinking in the military and his life became a living hell for him and all around him, I even cared less for it.
Occasionally we drink a glass of wine or port when at home, but when we are at a party, or somewhere else, and have to drive home; one of us drinks no alcohol whatsoever.
We know people close whose car was hit by a drunk driver; they lost their daughter who was thrown out of the car and de-headed. Her father was badly injured but went out of the car to go to her, and found her like that on the pavement. [think about how that must have felt].....
My wife and I will try for our two sons [5 and 7 now] to experience alcohol when 15-16 [if we can make them hold off that long]. And we will keep a close eye on them when they start drinking.
As with A LOT of things in life; make it something to ENRICH [enjoy] life, NOT TO DESTROY IT.
Bottom line; better to be there when your son drinks [his first] drink, than when he will so when you can not watch the effect it has on him.
Teach your son how to drink! [THE RIGHT WAY].
