Connectors - speaker wire

Post by sunshinefc3s »

Guys,

From an SQ perspective, is there any reason not to use weather-pack and/or metri-pack connectors for speaker wire runs?

Weather-packs are rated to 20 amps...
Delphi Weather Pack Connectors

Metri-packs (150 series) are rated to 14 amps...

Delphi Metri-Pack Connectors

Other option I see is the EC3, XT-60, Deans connectors.

Thoughts regarding SQ?

Thanks.

Great question. I have been wondering the same thing regarding spades at the amp or copper wire directly under the screws.

Every connection causes resistance. The bigger question is if they are crimped properly. Honestly 1 or 2 in the line crimped properly shouldnt make a sound difference. As far as spades in an amp, I always use them. They look cleaner and keep stray wires from shorting anything out. Deutsch connectors also work well if you have the crimper for them.

Weaklink said pretty much what I was going to say. The only thing I can add is, look at how thin the wire is on those connectors. If you are running 16,14, or 12 gauge to those, I'd expect a loss of some sorts. Also, the conductivity properties of copper wire are lost running through that connector. Would it be an audible difference? I highly doubt it. I just bring it up because if you are spending high bucks on super high end speaker cable and then terminating with those you'll loose whatever advantage you might have gained.

I just use insulated spade connectors myself. If you have speaker wires and put one of each connector on each wire you do not even have to worry about plugging them in wrong later. You can also wrap some tape around them after they are connected to make a quick harness out of them. It is not only much cheaper but also allows you to use larger wire as well.
