planing a build with the M series amps
hi guys I'm planning a build with 3 M series amps and just wondered how good these amps are compared to newer amps on the current market..?
What would you put them up against..?
This will be my first old school amp build obviously I'm using new school speakers..
Thanks

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
its not an apples to apples comparison. Most modern amps are class d made for max power and ok/good enough sq. The m's are class A and made for sq over power out.
what else can I say I am a grumpy asshole most of the time.
Re: planing a build with the M series amps
Thanks for the reply are they pure class A or A/B..ttocs wrote:its not an apples to apples comparison. Most modern amps are class d made for max power and ok/good enough sq. The m's are class A and made for sq over power out.
I know its not a direct comparison but just wondered in today's world if these amps were still good all these years later.. I will be going 3 way active.. I have all the gear and my car is in the shop now..
I suppose I'm just wondering if ill be disappointed with the amps..?
The rest of the gears really good..
Re: planing a build with the M series amps
well asking here isn't going to give you the most unbiased reply
It depends on how you like your music. These are not made to vibrate the cars 2-3 cars away but they can be made to vibrate the car next to you with some sweet sq. I am planning on my next build being MS amps and have no fear.

I plan to compete in the UK in SQ.. I will be in a team for EMMA (European Mobile Media Association)..
I will be using 3 M series amps..

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
This is the system as follows..
So this is the layout for this setup with the old PG M series amps.
Source: Fiio X5 III + Pioneer something for Satnav and other stuff
DSP: ZAPCO Z8 IV II
Tweeter: Audible Physics RG50
Midrange: Audible Physics RG100
Woofer: Audible Physics AP6.25
Subwoofer: Hybrid Audio Clarus 12
Midrange on dash at OEM location in custom install in free-air. Tweeters close to the mids on A-pillars. Midbass in 14L net volume enclosures, possibly ported. Subwoofer in trunk in custom sealed enclosure, 35L estimated.
Trunk layout is still changing, but the amps will be in a straight line. It’s very tight, but looks classier. 2nd battery in spare wheel well. DSP & power distribution are not decided yet. Subwoofer in right side cavity.

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
It's a work in progress, the speakers sound real nice I know that much you can't get the RG100 4" wide bands anymore they were limited edition. I just hope the amps don't let the rest of the system down.. I will be using digital output from my media player to the zapco dsp..
The guy that's doing the install is an extremely good installer and is the European champion at EMMA in SQ.. He only charges £200 a day.. I'm booked in for around 19 days..

I'm only 10days in as of today he's done a hell of a lot so far, working 8 hour days..
The standard of this guys work is unbelievable he has real talent. Without doubt he's one of the best audio installers in the UK he also has a background as a sound engineer..
I maybe able to share a picture or two tonight..?
I think this systems gonna upset a few people in competition..

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
Instead of sharing pictures on this site I will give a link to my installers page so you can follow the build and see his other projects.. I probably should have done this before.. But i thought I'd whet peoples appetites with a few pictures on site first..!
If you guys want a build and you live in the UK then Peter's your man..
Enjoy..

I'm off to pick her up tomorrow..
To quote my installer "I just might have tuned a masterpiece"...
That's saying something from peter trust me..!

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
this system has everything to sound top notch!
Where did you find these amps in this condition?
Hope you changed the power supply caps...

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
I have been getting used to the system in the car now I had it a while.
It'ss due another tuning session now it has been run in.. I've seen n heard some good systems, but this things like next level top shelf.. I'm well happy with the outcome but it came at a price all in about £8,000, but I feel its money well spent..!

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
I got an amp left over from the build I have a M-50..
I bought the M-50 for a subwoofer up front but it ended up the midbass is that good in my car I don't really need a subwoofer in the glove box..

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
Your install is looking great.
I don't know if you sorted this out or not, but the M series are Class A/B.
To my knowledge no one has made a Class A amplifier for car audio use. I have seen amps marketed at Class A, but in practice they were high bias Class A/B, not a true Class A output stage. These amplifiers operate in a Class A range longer than a traditional Class A/B amplifier, but they really don't have the same fundamental design as a Class A amplifier.
Now, there might actually be a real Class A car audio amp out there, but I just never came across it.
Class A amplifiers are very inefficient, and very few car audio systems would have the power (current capability) to support them.
For example, I own a pair of Class A mono amplifiers for my home audio. They draw around 1000W each from the wall outlet when they are not playing any music at all. Back in college, they easily kept my dorm room warm, as we left them on 24/7, so they were always ready to sound their best if we used them.

Got "schooled" by member shawn k on May 10th, 2011...
No longer really "in tune" with the audio industry, and probably have not been for some time.
Hands down the forum's most ignorant member...
Don't even know what Ohm's law is...

Re: planing a build with the M series amps
thanks for the comment..
As it happens I have been thinking about a valve pre amp output stage..
