Damage to the woof?
Unlikely.
Most home amps don't have the near power of higher end mobile units.
Impedance... Perhaps you've connected a 2 or 4 ohm auto woof to a home amp rated for 8 ohms and the amp said "fuck that" after being over driven beyond it's engineered capability.........

The only stupid question is the one not asked .......

i had an audiobahn 12 in a sealed box wired at 2ohms hooked up to the sub channel on my 5.1...it only seemed to pose an issue when i'd crank it way up for too long...the stereo would shut and i'd just turn it back on and back off on the volume a lil...guess it's not the way to go, but it did sound pretty good.
what if the hokey pokey really is what it's all about?

I have ran many of auto sub woofers off of home stereo and never had a problem. I have actually talked with many tech support fellas from Audiobahn and they do the same. Some subs sound like crap off of full range but most I have tinkered with dont sound too bad and if you are using a separate receiver to power the sub you can adjust the power so the sub blends in with your home audio.
The sub doesnt care where the power comes from as long as its not DC power(and you wont have a problem with a home stereo doing that as often as a car audio amp in some situations). You may just have a bad receiver now .
I am personally going to run 2 12'' Alums shortly in my pad
