5x7 or 6 1/2 component set

Is there really that big of a sound difference between the two? Are the 6 1/2's less sloppy when mid bass is hitting? Or is it just personal preference?

A 6.5 component set is 99% of the time going to have a much better crossover, and probably tweeter too. Not to mention being able to mount the tweeter wherever you like is also handy.

Technically the oblong shape does not produce sound as well, though you probably wouldn't be able to hear the difference in an A/B test.

definetly a 6.5" because of the mount options for the tweeters. Not to mention the 6.5 will have better cone control and more accurate reproduction of sound.
