1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited (New Pics) 4/1/09

Post by 5.9Limited »

Hey all...just getting started. Will have pics up soon but heres the plan. I realize compared to some its nothing too extravagant, but Im thinking it'll sound pretty sweet. Here's the sketch.

- 2 JL W6v2's powered by a 600.2 Ti with Ti 1F cap,
- PG Rsd 6.5's with mids in doors, tweets in dash powered (for now) by an oldschool Alpine V12 mrv-f303. To be replaced with a 500.4 Ti when I have the $$.
- headunit will be finalized on friday, probably going with an upper model in the kenwood excelon line, I've gotten really good reviews here on them so I'll give it a whirl.

Im getting all my stuff from a good friend who works at an home/mobile audio shop in my town, is hooking me up with my head unit and subs at COST, and custom making me all my RCA's custom to length with sweet cable and gold ends FOR FREE. they don't stock the headunit I really wanted but considering I'll get a kenwood at cost, I'm down with it

so far I've rerouted my power wire underneath the car...(tricky) and have installed my LPL44 in prep for the 600ti. again pics as soon as tomorrow as I really dig in and get started.

well things have changed a little... just like they always do.

funds ended up being tight than expected :x so I couldn't spring for the JL's...whcih were still friggin expensive at dealer cost! so I ended up ordering a pair of RSDC 10's because of the price, and because I've heard good things about 'em too. again, pics are coming...

I had an amp in the vehicle already running my doors (the alpine mrv-f303) . but relocated it, (pics coming) . and today I'll be running my rca's installing the Rsdc 6's in the front doors.

I picked up my headunit last night... ended up with the Kenwood Excelon kdc-x693, just came out like 2 weeks ago I guess. I wanted the new x993 but the guts and internals and external are Identicle but the 993 has bluetooth built in, mine doesn't....but the savings were substantial enough to swing me to the 693..and the fact that they don't have the 993 in stock for another couple weeks affected my decision too..Im really psyched, i read the manual last night and it has a TON of mixing options. Because I was getting a deal from a buddy I also picked up a reallllly nice expert level stinger rca for my sub too. It'll run to my 600.2 Ti. Retailed for $72 but dealer cost plus 10% was way less than half that....(gotta luv mark up huh??)

again, I'll try to get some pics up today,,,,when you really get down to it, I know we're all pic junkies!

honesty...you wont ever look back stepping UP to the RSDc's

i have been able to buy JL gear at dealer cost for a while now....and have no plans of switching out my RSDC. the dealer cost of W6's is MORE then 2x the price you see rsdc's going for. and even if i was GIVEN one of each....i would still use the RSDc

thanks fowler, Im psyched to get 'em in. today was a looonnggg day... both my kiddo's have nasty colds so I got to work on the install way later than I wanted, then lost half the afternoon cause my wife had to do some arrands , then I had to make dinner cause my son was feverish and wanted to chill with mom...so.. all that to say I couldn't even manage to remove all the old wiring that was a hodge podge of crap thanks to the previous owner... and get my rsdc's installed in the doors/dash...speakers are in, drivers side is all wired...passnegers not quite done....so no sound on the way to work tomorrow Damn it.

tweeter in stock location. they barely fit under the dash trim so I'll probably flush mount them in the trim piece for now.

existing door speakers. pioneer coax's. the previous owner only used tape on his connections, which had fallen off leaving the leads exposed and corroded. again, nice huh??

my wire lead to the new rsd 6's in the doors. you can see the factory connector that left very little option, fortunately I managed to feed it trough the side of the grommet, protecting the wire, and leaving the factory connector in tact.

crossover location in the kick panels. Had a nice spot for them on both sides, they both covered by trim panels and completely hidden.

more pics of my install...head units in. kenwood excelon 693. really really like this unit bot in appearance and quality. Really nice sound with great tuning options. also you'll see the alpine in its final resting place with all the old wiring removed...soon I'll be making MDF "feet" to secure it to the floor.

more to come..hopefully building the box for my RSDc 10's tomorrow.

the final install. after a bit of tweaking I finally got the thing to sit level and not look completely crooked. using the trim piece that came with the install kit looked a lot better than the kenwood trim.

first shot of the unit installed. its sitting pretty crooked and I used the kenwood trim in this pic, and didn't like how it fit or looked. left too much space all around, looked cheesy.

alpine V12 all hooked up to new rca's , new power and ground too..still needs tweaking, (and vaccuming) . it'll be secured soon and dressed up a bit with MDF feet, and a carpeted MDF "picture frame" .

if you're thinking the kenwood still looks crooked, its an illusion...the opening in the dash trip isn't square , its more of a trapezoid and is not level either. I put a torpedo level on the unit and its dead level...the bottom pic shows the weird shape of the opening better... over all im pleased with the outcome. :)

mmm ... I think you may have one of your corner screws in one of the guide holes instead of the screw hole. I'd say the lower left one. All the installs in those vehicles are pretty standard Chrysler mounting. Level or not, it should sit squarely in the opening. Your whole vehicle could be on a non-level surface, throwing off your measurements.

I always hated Chrysler kits with just the 2 - 10mm screws. That is the type right? Not very sturdy to start with. I don't know how many times I've put one back together only to realize I did that same thing.

Nice head unit by the way!

trust me I though the same thing you did!! I figured this can't be right but it everythings lined up as normal, guide pegs in the right holes, screws in the right holes. I mad sure my wiring behind the head unit was neat and not throwing the unit off at all.. I even modified one of the guide pegs on the bottom to get the unit to sit more square...and I emailed the co. I bought it from but haven't gotten a response yet.

its not so bad it really bugs me like before, but I know its still not 100%..so i'll have to tweek it a tad more.

thanks I really like the unit so far!!
