After running those (malwarebytes and SuperAntivirus) I've noticed that my CD burning has picked up a little speed. Haven't noticed much else so far.

So whatda ya think ... does that log file show anything bad? I noticed some remnants of symantic still there. That came with the computer.

Ok get rid of these things....and remove norton and mcafee:

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ftutil2] rundll32.exe ftutil2.dll,SetWriteCacheMode
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PL2210Z] C:\WINDOWS\P221ZI98.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe -startup
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\issch.exe" -start
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DeltTray] DeltTray.exe
O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

After you remove those...run that Combofix.exe

I know I'm not helping but this is exactly my same peeve with Windows. The antivirus/antispyware programs you "need" to run just to perform day-to-day tasks without getting "infected" is usually worse than the infection itself
I have a computer on my floor you can tell that to.......it shutsdowns over and over....massive infection

How is that any worse than AVG restarting every day?

How do I remove the remnants of Norton? If I remember, I had to use a 'tool' to get it off in the first place. Apparently it didn't get everything.

Should I just use Highjackthis to remove those things?

You can use hijack this to remove some things.

But it won't remove any files from norton....here's a link to get the tool.

http://service1.symantec.com/support/ts ... g=hm&lg=en&

and here's one for Mcafee too:

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

Also you can try the add remove feature in control panel. Of course using the tools I provided should work anyway...but if you didn't want to download any tools........

OK so now what?

Without McAfee or the like, I don't have virus protection? What about parental controls, Firewall?

I'm getting windows alarms about security risks. Is this right?

That's what Super Antivius is for.....it will eliminate any threats when you run the complete system scan....if you are runnning into security windows you might want to check your safety setting

Go to
Start
Control Panel
Internet Options
Security
What is your level of security ?

Okok...sorry didn't realize you had posted in the thread....

use Avast for anti virus
Super antivirus?? never heard of it.....

so....dont say I told you about it...

Super Anti Spyware......is the one I suggested
Anyway yes you will get alarms.

And firewalls...BS.....BS BS.....
Windows firewall is just fine. Most other firewalls are a pain in the butt, unless you know what you are saying yes to or no to when it pops up...then it's fine...(and also if you like annoying firewalls like mcafee and norton's.)
Those firewalls are ONLY as smart as you. So if you say yes or no to when the wall comes knocking....and you say yes or no to the wrong thing...it can ALLOW all the bad stuff in, or Lock you out from the good stuff...
Seen it so many times when I was working for PGE. Got these guys surfing porn on their laptops and also forgetting their PW to their norton internet security....got it so that the porn keeps popping up and the firewalls were useless at that point...and unfortunately because they lost their pw, we had no way of removing the firewall (this was prior to the norton removal tool) so we had to wipe and reinstall..
So if you really want to use a firewall...feel free...but just so you know...your system (seemed to be pretty infected from your talkings above) was pretty squirly even after having norton and mcafee on it....does that tell you something? Does that tell you they both were/are working? and catching things?
Hmmmmm....ya....90% of the computers I get for infection repair, would have one if not both of those programs....and believe me...they dont do a real good job. Part of the problem is that the people who design these infections knowwww that one or both will be installed on most computers....
IE: go buy a dell, HP, any motherboard or any brand name computer you will GET Norton for free....or on the motherboard driver disk, comes with a free installation for it.
Go sign up for AOL, or Comcast...you get Mcafee.

It's a given...that probably around 70% of PC users has one if not both of those installed on their machine. Anyway...get my point?

Did you run Combofix?
Is your system running better?
any other symptoms...?
Also if you want...combofix makes a log file...you can send that one to me too....and we can Verify that you are running clean.

After having run the programs I suggested....the first time....might you run them at least one more time.....(make sure you run the FULL scan, not quick....)to make sure the infections have been removed and such.

Also I suggest updating the programs if you haven't done so today....(before scanning again).
And keep running them on a constant basis. At LEAST weekly if you are a Casual web browser...if you are More than casual...at least scan every few days.
Also suggest teaching your family or whoever that uses the computers to be careful to not install things that they don't know about (fake anti virus/spyware programs etc....dont click on any Free million dollar prizes or free laptops, nintendo wii's PS3, xbox etc....
Porn....is probably one of the worst....along side with gambling sites...
If you need to have them....I suggest finding one or two sites that you like....and don't deviate. Try to find ones that don't pop up other sites.
If they do....you are going to kill your computer.

Do research on the sites before you choose them...some could be real nasty and cause real issues...and then you'll be back to see me...
I charge ALOT for V&S removal...($150 a pop) But I am friggin good! :)
Most stores in my area only fix a little bit of the problem (v&s removal $100)or they tell the customer they have to whipe and reinstall ($100 for wipe) back up data ($100++++) on top of the initial diagnosage ($69) in my area....
So all's said and done...I am still cheaper in the long run.
And thats why they come back to me!

So ya .. Super Anti SPYware isn't virus protection right?

In your post on the first page, you listed all those wonderful links. You said you only use the 2 .. malewarebites and superantispyware. Those were the 2 I installed along with the combofix as you mentioned above. I should have antivirus too right?

Anyway, I ran them twice. Noticed a slight increase in speed of burning cd's. May be my imagination. Also seems to have changed how one of my 'regular' websites look. Or it's just coincidence that the site changed at the same time and not my computer? Would doing this change how my browser (netscape) displays a page? Or was my browser using a cache and this erased it?

Otherwise nothing really that different. Neither program found too much. I will run the combofix again and send you the log. Which reminds me, do I have to purchase the upgrade to Superantispyware to get it to 'REMOVE' the spyware and not just quarantine it?

I tell you what is the biggest pain in the ass is 'HP Update Agent'. (I have an HP machine) It has a mind of it's own. Runs in the background at no specified time, all the time. Seems like it knows when I'm trying to do something important and runs. Uncontrollable. Haven't been able to find where to access it to change any settings. Don't know why it's even on there. It will run and almost always slows down or freezes any other work I'm doing. It causes the cpu and fans to run hard (I can hear it running from an other room) It's still there cause I just had to shut it down again. I have to bring up the 'task manager' and stop it that way. I can't find it to eliminate it. 'Add/Remove Programs' doesn't list it either.

I will download the Avast and run that too...

Right spyware removal is for spyware, virus removal is for virus.

So anyway get Avast.

Yes infections can change the way a browser works/sees things.
there's things called BHO's (browser helper objects) that affect/infect the browser...
and when you say neither program found too much...the question is...what did it find...? It only takes one infection to hurt a machine.
Combofix tho...let me know when you get the log.

HP update agent....hmmm....not sure there...
you can go back to hijackthis and remove these lines if you dont want ANY HP stuff bogging you down:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HPBootOp] "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Boot Optimizer\HPBootOp.exe" /run
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\Hp\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - S-1-5-21-3017394585-1251865836-3728825216-1008 Startup: PinMcLnk.lnk = C:\hp\bin\cloaker.exe (User 'Mommy')
O4 - S-1-5-21-3017394585-1251865836-3728825216-1008 User Startup: PinMcLnk.lnk = C:\hp\bin\cloaker.exe (User 'Mommy')

O4 - Global Startup: Updates From HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\9972322\Program\Updates from HP.exe
O9 - Extra button: Internet Connection Help - {E2D4D26B-0180-43a4-B05F-462D6D54C789} - C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Vendors\CN=Hewlett-Packard,L=Cupertino,S=Ca,C=US\IEButton\support.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Internet Connection Help - {E2D4D26B-0180-43a4-B05F-462D6D54C789} - C:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\Vendors\CN=Hewlett-Packard,L=Cupertino,S=Ca,C=US\IEButton\support.htm

Does Internet Explorer work better? or do you just use Netscape now?
Just curious...is it a browser thing that's slow? or are you saying the computer in general is slow etc? Give me a little more info on what is going on there...etc.

Oh...and I suggested you run those on my list...I told you which ones I ran ONLY...which were those two....malware and super anti spy...

Anyway ya...you may need to run a few more first to get rid of the infections you have.

So add Avast to the mix, and also try spybot search and destroy.

Cool...I will run those tonight and send my combofix log to you.

Netscape is all I ever use because of past 'issues' with IE. Just seemed like when I did catch a virus (always while the wife or the kids using) it was while they were using IE. I hardly ever had problems while using Netscape. At least those I knew of. Like you said I may still have infections, just not obvious with that browser.

And no, nothing has been behaving badly (except that HP Agent .. oh and I-tunes gives me fits too). Just that I've been so used to Netscape, I asked about browsers because Netscape isn't supported anymore and some of my applications are suggesting to upgrade to a new browser.

And you may want to upgrade to a new browser...also realize that you can obviously run more than one browser. As stated by some, firefox is nice, Opera, Google chrome...etc....all have their pluses and minuses.

What happens with Itunes? I'm not a big fan....but...it works I suppose.
How old are the kids? (just curious...because it tooo can establish a little bit of info on what sites your kids browse and how smart they are about Hiding what the browse....)

And Believe me they know how to hide things these days...especially from ole mom and dad....I've cleaned up infected machines over and over again with parents comming in after a week or a month saying: "Hey you never fixed the machine it's still infected" I'd check on it...and say did you run and update your AV And AS software? huh? ok I fire it up, sure enuff never ran since it left the shop or even updated.
And then they tell me well that's because it could not get on the internet blah blah blah ever since we got it back etc etc...

So I say ok...let me look, oh....look at the history...oh you went to XXXporn.com and nudegirlz.com etc etc YESTERDAY....

ohhhh ok...uhmm...ya that was my kid...

so case closed..hehe
Pay me $150 and I'll have back to you in a day or two.

haha .. You give my kids more credit then they deserve. They are not computer savy. Which pisses me off because I figured by now they would be the ones showing me how to do shit. You know .. "dad give me that (insert electronic device) and let me do it!" .. But no, it's more like .. " I don't have to figure anything out because my dad will fix it/do it." And I try my damnedest to get them to work things out for themselves. I can't hold their hands for ever. But more often then not, if they can't figure shit out for themselves, it gets tossed to the side for something else to do.

Like the laptop's (the 1 u sold me) dvd drive I told you about. We still haven't figured out what is causing the glitching. You assumed it was a virus and had me do all these things to try and find the infections. But up to that point that laptop hadn't even seen the internet save for a 2 min wireless connection while we were in a McDonalds drivethru. (managed to navigate to her school's homepage) She was amazed and thought it was the coolest thing ever. But aside from that, It wasn't until I got the wireless router up and running that that laptop got anyware near the internet to even catch a virus. And now her $300 x-mas gift sits in the corner of her room barely getting used.

Now, I can appreciate you have your doubts about what people tell you. Remember, I owned a car audio store. If I had a dollar for every time I heard someone tell me "I didn't even turn it up half way before they blew up" I would be seriously rich! And I do have great respect for yours and everyone else's computer knowledge thats why I ask questions here.

But ultimately, after downloading this, erasing that, downloading more, updating this, scan after scan after scan. Nothing. I downloaded the Avast and ran it twice and it found 0. Nothing. So, I'm convinced that, 1. I don't have any serious infections and 2. the McAfee program was doing something right. But now I'm stuck with 4-5 different programs. Some of which, if i want them to function fully, I've got to pay to upgrade them and only for 1 yr. Then pay again and again for all those different subscriptions?

So, when my kids tell me they weren't on any bad sites, I BELIEVE them. They are great kids that don't lie to me! Understand that we live in the country. We have allot of land. They would sooner be outside riding dirt bikes, go-carts, playing basketball or baseball, sledding or whatever, long before being couped up inside surfing porno sites. They have better things to do.
