10" pg rsdc d2 use two or three?

Post by kg1961 »

Here is my question
I don't care as much on looks it all about how will it sound
First off my car is a santa fe suv
The amp being used is a pg elite.2
Would 2 ported rsdc 10 d2 be louder cleaner than 3 sealed?
I like rap/dance but im also not a bass head it needs to sound clean and good.
Also if ported what size of box and port or sealed what size
Thanks again
Mike

Yes but 2 subs ported will be louder than 3 sealed if I read your question correctly. Lots of people only do ported, I personally like sealed and here's why...
I build my own boxes. I am not a carpenter, and it's much easier to build a sealed box. You can fudge a sealed box size more than ported and still get a great output. Also, sealed boxes tend to be 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the ported equivalent.

I wanted to try and play with a ported box for my eclipse but I havnt been able to find specs on a ported box for it.
A few of these and a few of those.

Box sizes are small for sealed or ported I just want the best sound I can get. I can try ported as I own a box see if I like it and make what ever will stay in the car

I think a 3rd sub would surprise you how much more it would put out nice and clean in a sealed box. When I ran my 4 - 8" subs it would have surprised you how much impact they had for 8s, they just could not play all that low. Now 3-10s though would pound to no end... If you don't do it I think you will always wonder, if you do go and do it then you will just be happy you did it.....

With the power I have what size of box should be made?
The elite.2 birth sheet is 305x2 so I would guess it should be 900 plus at 3 ohm

Mike, best bet is to build a sealed box individually chambered for each sub since you have 3. Also build the box to PG recommendations. You cant go wrong there.

and if your looking for the best SQ, id go with the sealed set up especially since youll be getting your secret weapon from me soon.

I have read make the box a little bigger in a sealed if you have a little but less power

I don't think I can run 3 subs
For some reason I thought I could make the subs 1 ohm than make it 3ohm stupid thought
But my elite.2 will only do 1ohm stereo so shit that sucks

Go for it. Install all three woofers and wire them (coils in series for 4ohm) in parallel for a 1,33 ohm final load and then bridge that. It should be fine. Woofers in a sealed box will have a higher impedance than nominal. In this case about 5 ohm minimum. And anyways an elite can handle just about anything you throw at it. At least with proper electrical system.

Personally I wouldn't go with the recommended ported box because it is just so small. Problem is the specified port size which is tiny 1,5 inch diameter. That is just useless. That can handle a whopping 20 watts before the port starts chuffing

Recommended sealed SQ enclosure size is 0,47 cu ft per woofer and that includes woofer displacement.

put all the coils in series in the subs to make a 4 ohm woofer, then bridge them all and you should have 1.33 ohms

got that but a elite.2 is only stable to 2ohm or 1ohm stereo? 8) sorry Scott this is what I was saying in pm

I didn't realize the .2 was not bridgeable. I was going to power them with the .5 sub output which is 1100 watts at 1 ohm. You would either need to run 2 subs or trade the .2 for a .1 to run 3 I guess.

The theory of a ported box is for all the out of phase info coming off the back of the speaker cone to bounce around in the box till it comes out of the port as in phase information. Thus making one sub move the air that two would. The problem comes that the info is exactly in phase at the tuned frequency. Above the frequency it's getting closer to full volume. Below the frequency it starts to come out out of phase and canceling out the sub the lower it goes. Ported boxes can sound great but if the bass jumps around a lot some notes will sound louder than others when they shouldn't because they are closer to the tuned frequency. So 2 will sound like 4 at the right note but not consistently through the frequency range. A sealed will give you a more true sound because it isn't affected by the gains or loss or the port. Hope this helps

Ps. You will also get some gain in your SUV if you aim the subs to the rear.

Mike, why dont u just use 2 and sell the third? Ported in an suv like my newer T4R which has a single rsdc 12" dual 4 on a ti600 sounds freaking phenominal!!!! I would think 2 10" on a .2 would be freaking awesome ported!

Personally I'd do two in a slot ported box. Ohms work out better and more output.
