i've never had noise issues running old school analogue processors.. only when i've ran digi-processorsKUB3 wrote:I think a processing HU is the key to keeping it all simple. You shouldn't get noise issues if it's an all in one, or at least a one make unit.

yes, rca output from my pg/denon hybrid, i wouldn't call it old school but old school of thoughtKUB3 wrote:Marko, I am presuming you used an Analogue output from your old school HU... into whatever processing gizmo you used?

Ok, so if your chain goes like this:
CD player's laser pickup into onboard:
DAC (Digital to Analogue convertor) >
CD's Analogue output into gizmo's Analogue input >
Gizmo then converts Analogue input BACK into Digital for processing >
Digital signal finally converted BACK to Analogue ready for amps...
Ok, that's a LOT of converting back and forth going on there! At each conversion there will be a degrading of quality. This could be far simpler. In fact half as many conversions...
Clarion HX-D2 (or Pioneer) laser pickup into onboard:
DAC (Digital to Analogue convertor) >
Analogue output into amps.

it is a lot of converting but if your deck's transport isn't upto the job in the 1st place you can't get a head start
i found this out with my old nak cd700, it was light years ahead in terms of sq going into the rca inputs on a H700 than an alpine with optical in. sounds mad as logic would say alpine>optical in would be the best solution to get the best out of a H700.
transports on a high end headunit make a big differance, if they didn't what would be the point of running an F1 @ £2k

Well you can only trust your ears and experience, so I'll bow to yours
But that is a very odd scenario! Not what I would expect at all.
I have another tale of DAC's and transports too. (Sod it, this thread is so derailed, who cares
)
When I bought a Benchmark DAC1 for my home system, it was after some very intense demonstrating at an acquaintances house. We were testing the buffering nature of this DAC to really see if it removed the jitter as claimed (the prime source of errors in conversions). This unit will supposedly remove all jitter and so, in theory, any transport would sound the same. You'll have to read extensively why this is so (Benchmark Media online - there's a ton of white papers on the subject).
I was very skeptical. Not least because I owned a very expensive Teac VRDS transport. The test gear was studio level equipment: ATC fully active monitor towers. The room was filled with 6-8 audiophiles and me who's just a normal bod
Anyway to cut it short, the cheapo DVD player when used as a CD transport sounded as good as the best transport! This was all due to the jitter free DAC. This was also tested using a Chord DAC too, where you can turn off the buffering to A/B it.
In conclusion a transport makes f.all difference IF the DAC is a properly designed BUFFERING type
I have no idea what setup the Alpine is, so I can't comment...

it was a cda-7939 "cd-max", the nak blew it out the water on sq..
as with all car audio, always expect the unexpected and every scenario is differant, there's a million variants when it comes to car audio

the dacs in the alpine more than likely wouldn't of been that great otherwise the F1 wouldn't exist!
i got a few dacs to play around with too, an old coustic DR and zapco daii, both have optical in so may play with my home cd player (old sony job) and see what the results are
