amp restoration

Post by Thunderdome »

Hey does anyone know if you can re-anodize aluminum? I just picked up another orion hcca 2100 comp amp but the finish is quite faded so outside of paint could I powder coat? re-anodize or even plate it with chrome or something? :? Thanks

Short answer is yes. If you can do it at home all depends on how committed you are. You have to remove all of the old anodized layer, and the setup for anodizing is relatively simple, you can find instructions online. It will be more difficult with something that large for a DIY project, and colors are particularly difficult to get right for first time DIYers. You may be able to hunt around and find someone nearby that does it.

IMO chrome is jank, if you are going to pay to have the work done, then get it re-anodized.

Are you asking me or thunderdome? I personally like gold, and nickle. Both finishes look much nicer than chrome. I believe there is a chrome finish called black chrome, that looks pretty cool. It is like a smoke chrome.

Chrome is just to bright, to much like a mirror. All the other finishes are more muted.

I thought about gold but thought the price might be prohibitive

you would have a custom 2100 HCCA GS......Orion did do some very limited runs in gold marked with a GS i dont know if the 2100 ever was part of that ..............the cost of doing it your self would cost you as much if not more in the long run as it would to send out to be done ............... now if it something you want to lean and do more then once .....go for it but find some scrap aluminum to practice on a few times to work the bugs out ........ there is all kinds of things to go wrong with the process the first time you try it.......... it will look great and then come the dark spots ...... and its back to square one strip it back down and start over ........................o and powder coating at home easy yes i looked a few things up after Jacampb2 suggested trying it but i have a gas stove and that would be bad :siren: :siren: :siren: :siren:   the fumes given off during the process are flammable so you need a electric stove ..
