Hearing loss

Post by Bfowler »

so due to the nature of our fourm, im sure im not the only one suffering from this.

i never really thought about it until last night. i was with ~10 friends at a comedy club and before the acts went on we are just having a couple beers and shootin the shit.

it was pretty loud in there with ~150 people and music playing on top of that.

i started to notice something....when everyone at our table was talking i had to keep asking people to repeat shit....and everyone else could hear whoever was speaking fine....i also noticed that while i could hear music in the background, i couldn't tell what song it was. basically i heard noise...but could pick out individuals voices or single noses very well....everything just sort of lumped together as one loud noise

is my hearing fucked or is this repairable?

My dad has the same problem. He went to a hearing doctor who told him that his low frequency and midrange hearing were so good ambient noises would drown out everything else.

unfortunately your, our hearing is probably deteriorating. Loud music in the cars, and I read somewhere that each concert you go to damages hearing also. And bars with loud music, or live bands. You get the point. I frequently have to ask people myself to repeat themselves.

It takes 8+ hours of constant 90dB pressure to cause the onset of tinnitus.

Something like 6+ hours at 100dB and like 4+ hours at 110dB

hearing comes from the tiny hairs inside your ear.
don't know the word in english for the snale-like part thei're in.
pressure causes them to ly flat, resulting in hearing-loss.
after the pressure goes down, most of them will recuperate, some not.
obvious, if you repeat this often enough, the world will get more silent for you bit by bit by bit.....
sneeky; you'll notice it, when it's too late.
my advice; go to a hearing-aid shop and have your hearing tested!
takes away any doubt; and get yourself a pair of custom-made earplugs.
they helped my ears to survive high SPL over the years, and still enjoy THE POWER, since they block out only" too much "noise.
[on the shooting-range we can talk to each other, but a 357magnum fired at the same time, sounds just as loud as our voices].
TAKE CARE!!!! nico

huh? what was that you said?

I am in the club of the soon to be deaf. However my hearing is so well trained I can pick up very random noises that most people never hear such as a CRT TV powered on in the other room no sound or picture just on, you know that faint whine it makes to hold a black screen.
I think we've established that "Ka Ka" and "Tukki Tukki" don't work.

I hate that sound, sometimes the tv is left on with a black screen and everyone thinks its off. And im like why is the fucking tv still on and they look at me like im an idiot, so i go turn it off and then look at them like their idiots lol.

Anyway, our generation is going to be the most deaf generation ever, with everyone using MP3 players and such and loud ass systems.

But I always say FUCK IT, by the time I go deaf they will invent laser ear surgery

Fowler, I read an aritcle a while back about your type of hearing loss (I suffer from it too). It's the first part of your hearing to go when they are exposed to high SPL levels, and it has a certain name, I forget what it was called but it doesn't effect your ability to listen to your system. It effects acute hearing w/ high levles of backround noise, such as a club being loud and you not being able to hear your friends talking.

Let me ask you guys this. When I am at a bar and there is a band playing or loud speakers belting out music, or I am in my car and really have my system cranked, I get in 1 ear, my right ear, a very uncomfortable feeling. It is as if I can hear small amounts of fluid draining(kind of like when water comes out of ur ear after u swim in a pool) and I can't hear as well out of that ear because the draining sound comes constantly...until I walk away from the loud band or speakers.

It is such a distracting feeling. I have had an ear doctor and my regular doctor I believe look at it but they never see anything.

Does this sound like anything anyone has ever experienced?

It sucks because I think it must only happen at particular clubs or bars at a certain level of db. Perhaps around 135...the threshold of pain...although I am not sure and it isn't exactly pain. Just a large distraction...almost unbearable though because I can only change it by walking away from whatever music i might be enjoying.
