How do I find out what is positive and what is neg?

Post by KillerX »

I have wires hooked up to my deck and wanted to find out what wire is pos and neg I thought you could do this with a multi meter but forget how.

Would the neg not show volt when tested?

I know I could hook it up and see if the mid goes out instead of in but I want to make sure

when im in doubt i usually hook a old 9volt batt up to the wires and see if the speaker pops out or sucks in, probly not a good idea if you have a set of nice components hooked up. or you can put your volt meter on ohms disconect the speaker and put one test lead on the wire by your deck and the other on the the wire that was on the speaker and figure which is which. if the wires are color coded you can just see which one is hooked up to + on the speaker and hook up the same to+ on the deck ....hope that made sense, i just woke up

there is no way to tell with a meter. I would just hook them up and then listen to hear if any of them were out of phase and if they were reverse them.

What kind of car?

Do some research. By thast I mean try looking on ebay for a wire harness to fit your deck. TRY to match the +/- wires on the harness to that of your HU. See if the local store has your brand of HU and if they'd lookm at the harness for you.

I've had to do it too. Found out what was what on ebay.
