Another one down and another one down...

Post by smgreen20 »

Another one bites the dust.

I just got a BNIB set of Memphis tweets and after 3 weeks the left one just quit. No smoke, nothing. Just listening to Killswitch Engages new album (Due out this Tue.) and the left side tweet just quit. I had the RSD6.5c tweet installed on the left side that didn't work at all. It was dead as soon as I powered it.

I don't see anything wrong. All connections are good. I never messed w/them when I switched out tweets to begin with for anything to go wrong.

So far the only things to last are the PG Ti Elite tweets. I'm trying to retire them for collectible reasons. Yet at the same time I don't want to keep spending what little unemployed $$ I have left just to burn another one.

I'm powering them by 2 chs of the ZX450v2. What to do, what to do?

Anyone have any suggestions on some good sounding off axis 1" tweets that wont break the bank? Preferably something that will fit in the cutout hole of the PG RSD tweets.

Off-axis is going to be tricky... for that you need car audio tweets, and those usually aren't sold piecemeal.

If you were open to on-axis I would suggest these:

Or even the soft domed pair that Solace is selling right now (but they are even worse off-axis if you look at the data sheet).

The cutout mounting hole is exactly 1 11/16", but of course 1 3/4" would work too.

i have had good luck with vifa stuff in the past. i think they have been bought out since last i used them, but i would still check them out. they used to be a great budget option in my opinion.

Did you check for abnormally high DC offset on the left channel of the amp? I would be more concerned with why you keep blowing tweets, than what you can replace them with???
M: M100, M44 for a custom amp project
Zx: Zx500, Zx450, Black Zx350
ZxTi: 4 Zx600Ti's, 1 Zx400Ti
Ti: 5 800.1's & 900.7 for a custom amp project. 1 1200.1, 1 1000.2
Tantrum: 2 1200.1's, 1 600.4, 1 500.2
XS: XS6600

Remember: The chart serves only as a starting point. Ultimately you must use your ears as a guide.

I would be more concerned that maybe something was causing these tweets to smoke before I slap another set in. Are you sure you have them wired correctly? Don't have the tweeter and woofer swapped on the x-over maybe? It happens to everyone sooner or later but I would check everything to make sure that you just had a couple of bad set and that you are not smoking them for some other reason.

I run active. The only connection I messed with was behind the door panel where the wire from the amp connects to the 12" of wire affixed to the tweet.

I have been fine w/all other tweets. I guess I'm just over reacting. Sat morning wasn't the greatest and I was feeling majorly down on Sun.

The PG tweet was dead (some how) before I even turned the power on. It didn't even play a note. It was good when I ran it last.

I was listening to, what my guess is, a majorly compressed CD ( the Killswitch album) as the highs didn't sound right to start with. I want to think that's what the issue was. I'll find out just how good the record quality is on that disc tomorrow as the actual album comes out. I'll compare it then.

Luckily for me, the Memphis tweets have a lifetime warranty. So it's a free fix, just don't want to go through it again.

I don't know how I missed your reply. Must have posted at the same time that day. ??

I was thinking about this set, as you mentioned yourself "piecemeal". I know Clarions are really good off axis and I've always loved their sound. I'm just to broke to get them.
