My "No Limits" official install *8-2-09*

Post by smgreen20 »

I got my 3" PG RSD mid ranges in today. Other then I boobooed putting in the pass. side MR, it's upside down  , all else is done for now. There was a spot on both sides were the bondo met the side panel that you can see. As I was sanding you couldn't tell it would show up, but it's on the bottom so you really don't see it.

I also painted the insert trim on the dash bezel to match the A-pillars to help pull it all together. I'll buy some more cans of this paint and paint the sub box after I mod the speaker grilles.

When I update the sub box and the door pods (6.5" PG RSD redo, or the PG XS8's) I'll post it here. So w/o further ado....

Hey that looks sweet sweet sweet.....so is there any mdf ring? how did you get the drivers mounted in there.

I am curious....would be interesting to run my tweeter in such a fashion rather then the top of the door....I do like a high stage and think I could pull mine up higher without phase issues.

top notch work!!!!

Hot glue holds it in. No MDF ring. 3" PVC grinded out a bit to fit snug.

wondering if there is going to be a grill on the 3"? looks bare without it. did you angle them like you did after experimenting or just like that because???? What kind of car is that anyway or did i miss that? I would not personally want something like that sticking out that much from the pillars, i like them shorter, more natural looking, as they do not look factory at all. looks sort of unnatural and thats fine if you want that. just not for me.
screw car audio, I'd rather go fast....errr, wait a minute.

It's Y2K GMC Sierra ext cab. There's no room behind the A-pillars for the mid. I angled them in the way I did for imaging purposes. It doesn't stick out all that much really.

I know those vehicles, I do not agree with you. first that 3" sucked balls and your going to need an eq for them like no other, and the tweeters are completely positioned wrong.

I give you credit for going outside the norm of installation, but you would want the array on axis.

did you listen to the speakers in that position before you committed to the installation?

again i give you credit, but at the same time I have to say no way on quality of the sound with both physics and "been there done that" to back me up.

The speaker wires to the tweeter were pulled to tight so I couldn't position the tweet the way I intended, but that has been rectified. Now both the tweet and the mid aim at the rear view mirror.

For 75% of the music/material I use and listen to the imaging is dead on. W/the other 25% it seems to be off to one side or the other. When I get my truck back from repair I'm going to mess w/the phase of the speakers to see what that will do.

I have a set of Clarion 4x6 plates that I love the sound of, I also thought about trying those. I think they would look a little more "natural" glassed on the A-pillars.

My only complaint is that the way it's set up now, it doesn't get as loud as I'd like it to, but then again it's for SQ and not SPL.

I do feel like I have an EQ like no other when you combine the 2 I have. The Eclipse HU's 10 band Para, and the Audio Control DQS's 30 graphic per channel plus its 2 para per channel as well. As you can see I have a shit load of EQ (and a powerful one at that) at my disposal.

I was however shocked that the 3" mids read 7.6 ohms for a 4 ohm driver. The 7.6 ohms along w/the 3.7 ohms of the tweets on that xover I feel has given me the most issues to tune. That's another reason why I'm toying w/the idea of using the Clarion 4x6 plates.

Update on the front end after the wreck.

I have to build a box for a friend today and he has some tint spray. We're going to spray the GMC logo on the front and see how it turns out. If it does good, the tail lights and ALL chrome on the truck will soon follow. Anyone ever mess w/spraying over chrome? Pointers/tips?

Nicely done on the updated front end. Isn't repairing/replacing things after a wreck fun? (NOT) The only plus side is you can make it better than before, but it usually hits the wallet pretty hard.

Their insurance paid for it all. Everything! I was given a quote of what the OEM parts would cost and I could do whatever I wanted within that price. I was given a check for the lights and had $95 left over.
