ChaosWarlord26 is right - 2 15's SEEM to have more cone area, but if you do the math, the single 18 has slightly more.

Bigger subs are more efficient as a general rule - however, for a good IB sub you really need to look at the Le (inductance) of the sub, the cone area and its xmax.

for good IB, you need as low an inductance, maximum cone area and as much XMAX as possible. Take the Acoustic Elegance (Highly regarded as THE BEST IB sub available)
http://www.aespeakers.com/drivers.php?driver_id=8

Xmax of 18.5mm
and an Le (inductance) of a CRAZY LOW .33mH - lower the better.

Take a look at the Dayton HO 10 (also highly regarded as a real SQ sub) and it has a low Le of 1.9mH.

The Fosgate T215D4 on the other hand has a high Le of 5.5mH - more like an SPL sub than a SQ sub

The Focal Utopia has an Le of 2.05mH ...

my point is - you need something to move lots of air (15", 18" or multiple 10/12's) and it needs to be accurate and exceptionally responsive - otherwise it will just be woofing air without producing accurate sound.

So, in your search for an IB sub IMO AE would be as close to perfect as you can find.
Can you elaborate on what you mean here? 2-15's have more cone area period than a 18, almost a 1/3 more. Now displacement can come into factor, but 2-15's has and will always have more cone area than a 18

.
Am I missing something how does 1 18 have more cone area than 2 15's?

I have been looking for a (preferably NIB) Stroker 18" D4, since one of my 18"s was single VC instead of dual VC...

Umm...

2 - 15" drivers: 353.25 sq. inches
1 - 18" driver: 254.34 sq. inches

my bad - when I did the calc I read it as 354 not 254 - I edited my other post - took out the brain fart.

smaller box for SPL vs SQ sounds right, at least thats what I always seem to see in manuals - though someone will have to explain why that is. my guess is smaller box = higher power handling?

I agree with ttocs here... While I have only ever heard 1 SPL system, I have looked at lots of build logs and whatnot and they all had/have ported enclosures.

if you think that is big, wait till you build the box. I remember seeing a system with 2 in a ported enclosure. I asked if they just ported and carpeted their fridge or what the enclosure was made of?!

Yeah, but none of them have that old-skool look and feel like M&M's, XTR's, Exacts, Strokers... but I dont think M&M/Orion/SoundStream made 18's in those models like Cerwin Vega. Could be wrong though, that was a LONG time and MANY dead brain cells ago.

Anyone know if there are any M&M 10's or 12's left in this world?

How about these, although I only own a pair of 15's Image

I would put a dollar on the Hart MS1000's keeping pretty close to the strokers in output. Mccauley sound can still recone them from what I understand.
