Running a ZX500 Bridged. 2 or 4 Ohm?

Post by Pillow »

What Ohms would you all recommend running a ZX500 at for daily use on subwoofer duty?

I am having the speaker rebuilt so I can do Dual 1 Ohm coils for a 2 Ohm total load OR Dual 2 Ohm coils and run it at 4 Ohm load.

Is the power increase even that noticeable between 2 and 4 Ohm in a ZX500? Since it is a regulated power supply maybe there is little to gain?

Either way is fine IMO, but I want to make it a situation where the amp will not fry itself or compromise the SQ that badly.

Thanks!

Eric D probably just said it best in a different post:
But, most any Ti amp can do 2 ohm mono and double its power with music. Sine waves, now that is another story.

keep a close eye on how hot it gets, this time of year it will not be as big of a deal as it would be in summer.

I really didn't think the old ZX series was safe at 2 ohm mono personally.

Why not add another ZX500 instead?

Thanks for the offer Pedi, but I already have three ZX500s. Your ZX500 is super minty though!

I just cannot fit 3 ZX500s where I want them. So I think I will have to scale back and run a ZX450 and ZX500, which will look nice... Down the line I might switch it to 2x ZX350s and a ZX500. Granted I think the ZX450 may fit the bill where I will not need to "upgrade" the power to the ZX350s.

3 or 4? You will never get enough... Buying a fourth makes things easier to let yourself buy additional gear to your install
