amplifier cuts off
Alright so I just bought myself a used pheonix gold amplifier, its an octane R5.0.1. Anyways ive had a couple issues so far and im really looking for some help. So the problem stats when i turn up the volume, after about 10 15 min of blasting the amp completly cuts off and the the blue ring around the phoenix gold logo starts flashing on and off and i have to turn down the volume for about 2 mins and it resets. After the first time tripping tho its alot easyer to lose the amp again.
Anyways any suggestions ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks!

Sounds like it might be getting too hot and the thermal protection is kickin in.
How are the subs wired?

well i have two subs in a homemade box directly wired to the amp, and ya im pretty sure it is the thermal protection cause the THO red light used to come on before that, problem is i dont know how to prevent it cause the amp is located in a nice open space so it shoudnt have any trouble at all but im not sure
Please let us know what exactly --"after about 10 15 min of blasting"-- Means.
Are you going to full volume for your blasting ?
When you say home-made, did you make it and did you measure to fit the sub or the space for the box?

You need to find out what ohm the woofer is. Is it a single voice coil or dual voice coil?

Yeah..........I'd recommend droping that down alittle. And turn down the boost aswell.

Well sounds like you hve 3 problems
1. Your Gains (or Sensitivity) os not correctly set, you should never really be more then 50% , depending on headunit.
2. Your woofers may be connected incorrectly to the amplifier , showing a too low load on the amp and heating it up quicker
3. You have a friend who has no idea about audio and just likes to turn everything up.
Problem 1 and 2 are easy to solve, problem 3 maybe a bit of a problem.
You lucky that you have a well engineered amplifier which switches off instead of breaking itself. If you carry on theway you are , I can guarantee you will break the woofers,

what kind and what size is your power/gropund wire ? this might help find out whats causing this.
and remember bass boast
makes the amp work allot harder
it just might be clipping or working the amp to hard with the wire you have ????
just some other ideas

Stick around and read some threads and you'll lear tons....
We all started somewhere ya know. Don't hesitate to ask questions. The only stupid question is the one not asked. And there are no stupid questions ....only stupid people.

having very little info to go on makes it tough for us to help, but i will give my .02.
I'm thinking if the gain is at 1/2 after readjusting and your woofers are wired correctly to show the amp a load of no less than 2 ohm's, i would take a guess and say there is something wrong with the amp on the inside such as a diode that is directly involved with the thermal protection.
I had a 400.2 Ti that had this issue and it needed to be repaired by PG. the tell tale sign that will have to be checked by you will be how hot it gets when it first thermals and starts to cycle on/off. just go somewhere listen to it at a good volume maybe 2/3ish it will eventually do as you say and then feel it with your hand. if it's too hot too touch for even a short time it needs fans, or your subs are loading the amp down past 2ohm's.
If it's barely warm my guess is it's a broken part on the innards of your amp.

screw car audio, I'd rather go fast....errr, wait a minute.
WHAT WOOFERS?
WHAT OHMS ARE THEY?
SINGLE or DUAL VOICE COILS?
Do you not understand these questions? You keep avoiding them. Other then thermal, it could be to low of an ohm load for the amp. As you push harder on the volume, the impedance will change more and the harder you drive the amp the ohms will dip to low for the amp to handle. That would explain also why if you went full tilt the amp would trip instantly.
