Old School Phoenix Gold

Post by skullbox15 »

So I'm getting back into the car audio scene again. I've got a 2004 C32 AMG that I've had for years, but finally want to rip out the junky bose system. Last time I was into this stuff, I had a QX500.1D and (2) XMAX 12s, and whole mess of other stuff from that era.

I was quite disappointed with current line of PG stuff. I actually just bought a bunch of soundstream stuff :(

We talking about the RSD series and the like?
Or the new black colored Titanium series gear just released?

You could always try finding some old school PG gear on the "For Sale" forum thread here.

Up to you. If anything, I seriously don't have good commentary about the new Soundstream gear. I love their old stuff personally (the Reference/Rubicons/Mules/Exact/DaVinci/Tarantula). But, it's your call and money.

What did you end up purchasing exactly?

what didn't you like about it?

a lot of people don't like that its made in china and many don't like the looks....but from a pure listening perspective. the amps are as good as they have ever been....and the rsdc subs....better then ever

(this is of course regarding rsd gear, i havnt got my mitts on anything since aamp took over.)

I got the soundstream reference 400.4 and a 500.1 It was the closest thing to the older amps. I have an Oz Audio 12" and haven't purchased any door speakers yet.

I really wanted to get some older Ti amps. I scouted ebay for a few weeks but didn't see anything that matched those specs in near mind conditition.

At the moment I still can't make up my mind on door speakers. I have 6.5 Bose components in the fronts, and 5.25 in the back doors. I was thinking getting some focals or maybe trying to find some of Oz Audio Matrix Elite components. Those are as hard to find as some of the older PG stuff as they haven't been produced in years as well.

Does anyone have suggestions for door speakers?

Top choice on the sub.... absolutely brilliant.

Those Oz Audio ME 180CS are hard to beat. One of the best I've heard. DD-A 2 ways are pretty solid also. If you can source a set of PG Ti Elite 6s (which there's a set for sale here in Australia) otherwise, the Morel Elate 2 ways are practically the same. Dynaudio 242 splits.

Whats your budget for the fronts?

if your looking for a great set of components - the RSD 6.5" comps are inexpensive and are really quite fantastic... as good or better than my diamond hex's from back in 1999-ish.

Another set to consider are the PPI 356cs 6.5" components. They are based off the A/D/S component set that won so many awards back in the day. I run a set in my wife's car and will be running a set in my next install. they are stunning and can be bi-amped through the passive crossover if you want - very nice set. I am putting about 180w per side to them in the wife's car and will be running about 240w per side to them in my install.

My next favorite is a big jump in price, but if I was going to spend a lot of money, Focal's are my preference ... but thats just me.

Wow you bought Soundstream over PG... Man did you fail. Seriously the new Soundstream is bling looks- crap product. But hey some mothers do have them. Anyhow you will get a second chance at PG soon when it all fails and is out of warranty.

If it's in your budget, Dynaudio 242's. I had a set of the 240's and miss them. Easily the best 2 way set I've heard/had.
