Micro Surgery
Micro Surgery
I am sure that most people could care less about soldering, but I just pulled off the most challenging soldering job of my life and am so "geeked" about it, I just had to post something.
Below is a thermal sensor from an Apple iMac computer. It was configured as an optical drive sensor and I needed a hard drive sensor instead. I took a guess that this required moving the tiny 1k ohm resistor from the first position to the second. I was right, and just powered up the iMac successfully. It ain't pretty, but it works.
I did not have a magnifying glass, and my safety glasses are a bit old and foggy. So, right now I am happy, but partially cross-eyed...

No longer really "in tune" with the audio industry, and probably have not been for some time.
Hands down the forum's most ignorant member...
Don't even know what Ohm's law is...

you should be ashamed of yourself there Eric
you've shown us better jobs in the past
this is by far the worst you've ever done
j/k, well done. these tiny bits are a pita to work with if you don't use magnifying lenses

This is the tip I used, which is the smallest I own.
Off hand the best analogy I have is it was sort of like using a fire hose to water your house plant...

Well, the sad part here guys is my solder job really is down right crappy. But if you take into account the resistor was about as big as a typical grain of sand, I am just glad it worked!
