Ive lived in the same small town all my life, I think our POP at the moment is maybe 120,000, in 1990-98 when I got into this addiction, obviously it was much smaller. We had 2.5 stores to go to, one was PG, the other was RF, and the other .5 was Rodek, the town was split 48%PG,48%RF and the other 4 was Rodek, all you seen at the comps was the latter 2. The PG fanboys (including myself  ) were more SQL oriented and the RF boys were SPL freaks, and it was a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE rivalry, Ill say this though, I was never able to listen to an RF SQ install, because evry RF setup in town was a wall of subs and nothing else  But I remember those RF amps to have GOBS of power, where as the PG's were close in power aswell but sounded better. I feel bad for all the Rodek guys because they had the SQ set ups but they had nowhere to go to compete unless they drove to Vancouver, or even as far away as Kelowna, at that time it took a good 6 hrs one way to get there. So we (PG and RF) kind of pushed Rodek outta Dodge.

So I guess what Im saying is PROPS to both brands from that era, and I still would love to get my hands on a Rodek now, as they were WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more expensive than both of the other 2 brands.

They also had the power and SQ aswell.

Interesting post........I love it when the guys talk amps.

I am not a fan of the RF amps, never have been, I have always prefered PG amps, they never did anything really on the SPL side, but in terms of pure SQ and good sounding cars there was nothing close.

I remember building a car with a RF 2 channel off 3 Kove woofers, the amp smoked itself within 2 weeks, replaced it with a M100 and it still plays.

What I do admire about Rf is they one of the few companies that have not been bought out, they have been buying companies but the ethos of the company is the same. In South Africa they have the best dealers and the best support system around, I admire them for their marketing prowess, but not much more, I don't like the woofers, I hate the splits and can just handle the amplifers. Sure they make power......but then so do other amps.

[quote="brenzbmr@sb"]woot

anyway i would agree with eric over the 200ix then the 250m2

rockford used to have this perfect system two 250m2s strapped to two power 15s 8ohms for 1400 watts of bass in your face. well i built 3 of those systems for 3 differnt customers..they all failed. really had no output to match my 2 4 ohm power 15s on one ms2125 bridged(seriously)
all cars had alternators and big wiring. one customer was so fed up he offered to buy my amp and give me two of the 250s, so i did some thinking and this customer had 2 punch 200ix one running 4 sets of power componant mids per door.

so i swapped the amps to were the puch 200ix was running a 15 each and the doors got the 250s * big difference. so then i took the 8ohm drivers back and installed two 4ohm drivers and readjusted all the gains and BAM this thing kicked major ass. the boxes i made for the powers were about 3.5 cubic ft per tunded at 33hz. the customer was like WTF.

I never pushed that rockford system again( if i remembr it was the same set up they used in there impala) the one thing i did notice that was impressive is how much fuller the 200ix sounded then the 250. quote]

Are you sure you are not referring to the 500m or 250m (not 250m2)? The 250m2 is not strappable. Is there any chance you had that little bass boost up on the 200ix? That could explain the "fuller" sound out of the 200. Just a thought. The Power series were designed as more of a purist amp, (no bass or treble boost on these guys) and I would have done exactly the same as you with those specific amps..ie. 200ix for the subs and 250m2 for the full range drivers.

Haha!! our populationg was around 2,000  :hurr: needless to say, there were very few of us that were into car audio. It was probably one of the worst scenes possible to try and learn this stuff, but hey that was part of the challenge I guess. I'll be the first to admit that when I was younger I never even heard of the term SQ  It was all about bone-shaking bass and RF was the best stuff that we could get our hands on (the internet was still in it's baby stages and there certainly were'nt any car audio forums or wholesale sites available ) Other than the trade magz, the only other hint of car audio were the two install shops that were still an hour away. :violin: As I got a little older I moved a little further south where there's acutally some population. I finally became a professional installer (my dream come true) and I got really tied up into the whole SQ bug. It was really nice to work for a retailer that consistantly had $30-50k home systems that I could use audition and use as a reference  Ever since I was younger, I've always wanted to try PG.. hell.. I wanted to try EVERYTHING at least once..lol,, but PG was a company that was intriguing to me. I finally got to install a system for a customer who had a ZX500 and ZX450. After the system was completed needless to say I was and admirer (PG that is) I still love the oldschool RF (can't forget your grassroots) but I've also had my fair share of PG (and many others for that matter) and love the gear.

I don't want peeps to think I'm an RF FREAK..lol I just like to chat. FWIW: I've already started collecting the gear for my next personal system for my next ride. The plan is to start with a NIB Sony XES P1 as the pre-amp, car pc, 2-ZPA0.5 and 2-ZPA0.3 (still need a 0.3) Possibly a couple of Cyclones.. depends on what the next vehicle is :hmm:

I would still like to get my hands on maybe 4 Punch 100ix amps and use that in an install. I would have them recoated to a different color to match what ever car I put them into.

Well, are you interested in any of this stuff I have? I really don't want it (need to clean out my basement a bit).

A lot of this stuff you can't put a price on, but I would be interested in trading it for something more useful to me.

oh i thnk its th 250m amps (the dark greyones that look like th 200ix) coem to think of it (ill have to find pics) it may have been the 500ones
not sure

and yeah i didnt have bass boost up on the 200ix, but the 200ixs hammered the two 15s way better then the 250s ever could have strapped. sounded more powerful and just plain better.

lol
