In my very first year into car audio my system was changing monthly. But the first two amps I owned were a ZX250 and a 100ix. I bought both as "they looked cool" and had good reputations. I soon realized the ZX sounded better on the components and the 100ix was best suited as a sub amp, where fidelity was less of an issue.

Unfortunately my brand new RF amp died in it's first week! The instal was spot on as it was fitted by a pro. Once I got the replacement amp back under warranty I sold it on and and never bought anything RF again.

Fast forward to 2010...

After recently listening to Soundstream Reference I can say these sound better than PG.

Further more I wouldn't be surprised if some of the high end italian amps are superior to SS. Perhaps the VRX, Sinfoni, Celestra would be strong candidates. But of course these are in a higher price point.

Bummer about the 100ix. It happens to all the brands though. I've seen faulty gear from the very best of them.

I havn't got my hands on any of the new SoundStream yet. Maybe sometime. I'm intrigued by the re-release of the Reference line.

I currently have one of the VRX amps in my car. The build quality is phenominal and the SQ is what you would expect for a high end piece. I can honestly say though, I've played with gear that's nearly half the price that sounds just as good and is probably as reliable. If you can pick one up for around dealer cost or less.. I'ld say it would definitely be worth it. Suggested reatail is $1,800 us.

Bit of another tangent while we were mentioning other amp options, but today I looked at some fine amplifiers. Albeit with insane prices, so perhaps a bit irrelevant. But then again, some of you guys pay thousands for a single amp just because it's rare, so what the heck. Besides it always helps to see what else is out there and gain a better perspective on how to spend your funds...

First of all the Audison Thesis. Looks far too bling and shiny to me, but it is an impressive item to study. The guts are very over crowded and bristling with details. All the sub boards are held in the hex bolts, the soldering is super neat, the components look absolute top shelf. You could spend half an hour just checking out the board construction.

Next up was a whole range of AudioWave amps. Far classier, with exceptional build quality. Dead simple layout, with mega spec over sized components, perfect in every detail up close. I've not seen a car audio amp built to this standard anywhere. Makes my old PG and SS look like junk. Sounds pretty good too!

In summary, not much in common with this RF thread perhaps. But worth a look if you get the chance :)

not heard the Thesis but can't help thinking it's over complicated, too much going on for a straight out and out sq amp.. but i'll reserve any further comments untill i hear one.

So you have met Grant then, what an awesome guy and no they don't sound pretty good, they sound flippin awesome, I remember listening to them last year at Audio active and thought , where the hell did that come from.

And he was still running a 3 way passive front end, the man is not only good at what he does but a true gentleman. The Larry Fredricks of UK........

My everyday benchmark for what sounds normal is actually high end home hifi. So by that standard "pretty good" is a very strong compliment! In car audio terms it's the best I've heard.

Grant also helped design the P15 Genesis amp. The Thesis happened to be his too, as a reference point. Although he said it's well over hyped and doesn't sound that great considering the mark up. No surprise there in high end car audio. Another one for the bankers

ps

I forgot to say, there is only around 9 Aspires in existence, going b the serial numbers I've seen. Makes PG's limited offerings look a bit common

Come to think of it, I have not been over to SB since Brian brought me over here. I still have an RF 250aII and a 125aII. Keep them as back up amps. Bu they are back ups to Orion's that are back ups to Xenon's that are back ups to a pair of ZED's (none of which are installed) . I have a number of other amps, maybe I should sell some at some point. ;)

Before I had any gear at all...RF was like the "sword in the stone" to me.

I have a special place for RF and it's not in the trash :naughty:
I too came from a small town where my punch ix amps and original kicker solo-baric subs dropped the jaws of passengers in my car. I have also

I remember the very first time I went to the local RF dealer. I could never forget their display.

It basically consisted of a mock vehicle with 8-12" Punch subs, a set of three-way Power series in the front and the same in the rear. This was all being powered by one Punch 40i :P Pretty cool demo!

I loved RF since I saw their Demo van at a local car audio shop. It had 2 power 1000's and 4 18" pro RF subs and it was awesome sounding! I had to have a power 1000 because of that van. Years later I bought one (chrome version with the red led's) and a pair of pro 18's that are still in the factory boxes. I'd never sell the subs or the amp I just loved that set-up. It's the main reason I got into car audio.
