Eq help for the towel
Hey all, I am in the process of acquiring a rsd65cs and a set of 4 inch coaxial that have had the crossover network removed. I havent decided what exactly Ima do with all of it. I have a pontiac aztec that needs some component love. It has factory components and I would probably just use the factory locations. i have also throwed around the idea of running a 3 way active with the 6.5 in the doors and the 4 inch and tweet in the kicks. So i have a few things I want some input on. Who of you would take the time and effort to put in kicks? Would I be better off putting another passive crossover on the 4 inch coaxials instead of trying to drive them active, reason being I dont have an amp that matches to run the tweets and i dont see a reason to buy a x100.2 just to run the tweets on. And finally, what crossover points should i start with and what does PG offer as far as active crossovers. my xenons are not capable because of the lack of 10x multiplier. Any input, opinions, always very appreciated. WTF would you do in my situation, keep in mind that i also have the need for the 4 inch coaxials in another vehicle, more importantly the vehicle that I drive everyday.

How are your stock kick locations? My car doesn't even have panels down there, and would have way too much crap in the way underneath to even consider them. Some cars are well suited to kicks, others are not.
Personally I find 3-way systems overly complicated. I wouldn't bother with one unless you were planning to install bigger than a 6.5" midbass driver.

Well the kicks look to have ample room for everything, especially with it just being a 4 inch speaker. Im really not even entertaining the idea of anything bigger than a 6.5 because Im wanting to keep it stock and not hack anything up. Im not crazy about the stock tweeter locations, which is the main reason I considered the kicks. They are located where alot of stock ones are, at the very corner of the of the window near the a pillar which is about 20 inches from the 6.5 in the bottom of the door. I suppose i could try them out in stock locations with some double sided tape just to see how they image and if it is unbearable I might try kicks. The stock speakers dont really create any image at all. There is no center at all
There is also room for horns and the stock midrange location looks like it would match up well. I would really like to get something in this car that will image well because getting a proper soundstage in my van is going to prove impossible.
Edit: i also just realized that the title for this thread was summin abut an eq. Sorry about that, i was up all night

I'm running a 3-way front end using PG RSD65 mid, PG RSD3 mid and Memphis PR-15 tweets (1 of the PGs blew). Running a 3way down low negates one of the main benefits of having a 3way. My truck, due to parking brake and hood release, doesn't well allow kicks so I keep my 6.5's in the door in hopes of getting a nice 8", the 3"/1" in the A-pillars.
I found that X-ing over the midbass at about 1kHz brought the soundstage up to where it should be. I will be making my own passive for the 3"/1" combo to xover at around 4.5-5kH, but for now I'm using the Memphis xover that came with the tweets and IIR that's at 3.5kHz. BUT I cross the 3" HP at 500Hz.
As Tom stated, it's daunting to try and tune. My staging is good, but my imaging is a bit off. I'm tempted to go back to a 2way, but I'm also looking for a nice 3way, like Eclipses 8365 set or the $$ Dynaudio360, or to just replace my mid w/a (sorry B) Focal. I think w/the Focal mid and the hand built passive for the 3"/1" would be the best/cheapest way for me.
T/A will be a big help too. I have to have a HU that offers that from now on. Overall I feel that the fewer freqs each speaker plays the louder they will play w/o distortion on any given power.

I had to move the hood pull to do them but I was amazed at how easy it was to move. Just unbolted it and was able to move it right next to the fusebox you can see it on the drivers side pic half way down my page.

I did loose the dead pedal but in the name of imaging it was a small loss. I am also running these bi-amped with a diamond audio D9 800.4 to ensure they have enough power.

nice kicks ttocs. I tried to talk my buddy into kicks when he had his stang and he didnt wanna do it. The factory Mach system was just so muddy and the 5x7 market isn't huge right now, with the exclusion of the ID xs57 which are costly, we couldn't find anything that was worth his time. Im thinking I will try the 65cs in the factory location for now and see what happens because my van really needs something better. Anyone know what I need to put a passive crossover back on the coaxials so I dont have to run them active. i have an xs2300 that I think these 4's will really like. Right now I have some full range speakers podded in the corners of the dash firing towards the center running very carefully off of my x200.4. They dont sound terrible but their response is pretty atrocious. Right now my response probably looks about like this

I run mine like so,
HU does 80% of the Xover work, w/the remaining 20% passive.
Highs output- 3" mid (500Hz, active-3.5kHz passive), 1" tweet (3.5kHz and up, passive).
Mids output- 6.5" mid bass (80Hz-1kHz, active)
Sub output- (2) 12" (63Hz-25Hz, active)
I can't remember the slopes of the top of my head.
